Plextor Rocks!!

Yeah I know...duh, right?

Well today I finally installed my first Plextor drive ever.

The 740a which is just a revamped Plextorized Benq 1640.

Awesome drive.

Every drive I had /w a certain media from CompUSA would only burn at 1x. The Plextor did it at 4x, nothing mind blowing I know. However, here are the drives I've owned since May 2003.

TDK
NEC
(2) Pioneers

The drive is dead quiet, even the tray is dead quiet.

If you can't pony up the $80.00 for this drive, the 1640 will be available shortly. It seems you can flash either drive's firmware for their different settings/functions, and even use the Plextor software with the Benq version.

On another note my ISP upped me to 8meg, so over all a good day.

P.S. I have 2 NEC 3540's sitting right beside me.

I had the SATA one too. Very nice drive. Sold it to a customer of mine as I didn't see much difference 'cept for speed, and I could use the money for something else. When I decide to go all SATA I'll probably pick one up again, but until then I'm plenty happy with my Pioneer 108 (with Piodata firmware).

what kind of media are you using? that drive will run most quality 4x at 8x & most quality 8x at 12 - 16x. at least mine does. my 708a runs most 4x at 8x. you must be using some old crappy media.
i do agree, i pretty much go exclusive plex now. though i usually wait for sale &/or rebate cause they tend to be a little pricy.
