X2 Question
I will be getting my X2 4800+ next week and have a question about installation. Is it necessary to reinstall Windows when I get ready to put this processor on my motherboard (Fatal1ty AN8)? I have Bios 15 installed on the motherboard which supports the X2 processors.

I'm not sure if it's necessary, but I'm sure it couldn't hurt, so I would say you should format.
BTW:Let me know how that thing runs once you get it up

No it's not necessary. However, it may not be a bad idea to update your AMD processor driver.

Thanks for the replys, guys. Necrosis, at the moment I'm using a 3500+ Winnie, I am not using a AMD processor driver. Could you please elaborate on your answer. If I don't reinstall would the second core of the X2 processor still be recognised? Which AMD processor driver should I use?

yes you are using an AMD driver. When you install a processor theres a driver in the computer for it (just like all other parts).
Its sorta a default driver that runs at the beginning when you first instal windows.
In any case, you can download an AMD Athlon driver at several locations. Just google it.

You don't need to install any amd cpu drivers unless you're running Cool & Quiet.

Yet it wouldn't hurt to download it. The only thing I can where there might be a problem is with some software that might conflict. However, that is something you'll just have to find out after installing it.

It's no different than changing out an optical drive. I really don't see the need in formatting.

The driver that makes your PC run as a acpi uniproccesor PC, has to be changed, you have to do this in device manager, but when you do it slows the PC down alot, so you might as well just reinstall Windows.

So why do people who turn Hyperthreading on/off not have to do this? I would think installing the latest driver from AMD would solve the problem. If it will work fine with the swap why bother? Honestly it's like I said early he really won't know until he switches processors.

Hmmm....the general consenus seems to be that it would be best just to go ahead and reformat my HDD, then install a fresh copy of Windows XP because I could possible encounter some problems if I don't. If I was just to swap out the processors I could run into problems, so just to save myself some grief, I think I'll go ahead and reinstall Windows when my 4800+ gets here later in the week. Thanks for all you helps and comments, guys, I appreciate it.
