Help with dell optiplex GX1 400mtBR+ cdrom issue

Prepare to be baffled... Sorry no spell cheker i'm on the problem system i'm repairing for someone.. he got it from his brother as payment for an over due debt

It will not boot with the cdrom it came with. I have an old 24X cdrw thats total crap and a used 52X, so I tried both of those.

I can load windows ME / the OS they want on it windows 2000 fails on mid install /even tried windows XP (worked )

the fail i'm haveing even with window ME or XP is that system dies when the CDROM drive kicks up to speeds to full speed... it's strange

I'm guessing it coudd be the crappy dell 200W psu but heck it's all intergrated P2 400 + CDROM, floppy and hdd shouldn't need that much anyways... the oses do install the problem shows up after...

With 200o if you remember installs part, reboots installs more it when it does the latter that the problem arises I really have had to wrestle to ge this thing operable

I can try another PSU it one of those wone with an extra propritary connector... but the rails are 11.87 for 12V and 5.11 for 5V so it looks ok there....

I've even tried a PCI ide controller does the same thing....

Any ideas?

Neon...you may be spot on regarding the power supply, just having enough voltage doesn't mean it can carry the amps required.

Another possibilty is mode the cd drive is in....can you change this in the bios ?
I know some linux flavors didn't like dma mode enabled during install.....
just a thought

This bios doesn’t let me have access, the drivers don't either I'm pretty well
at my wits end if it's the PSU it going to be almost imposable to replace...

it'd cost 15+ shipping for an adaptor just to find out

I've seen an oddball problem where you have to make sure the ACPI setting is enabled in the bios...

I've had install problems with that model for that exact reason with the Dell GX1 units.

I’ve tried with both ways, the mfg CDROM is fried I wonder if it screwed something
up. Especially since it's second hand and there definite signs a idiot worked on it.
Because instead of pulling the lever that releases the side the pried it off and broke
the clips.
