I think 256k upload is good for online gaming, since games usually depend more on your download speeds...
I used to have DSL with 256kbps uploads, and it ran all my games perfecty online! (one of them was the Final Fantasy XI online beta)

My adsl is 1.5mg down and 512k up and it is quite fast and good for gaming...more stable speed than cable at 3mg up/256-384k down. I have no router and a general dlink 315? adsl modem.

Good lucK- some USB modems don't like some chipsets - bog-standard VIA chipset (USB 1.1) being about the most problematic.
Cable, 300k down, 128k up, to PCI Ethernet card direct from the set top box that does TV and broadband (try to use interactive as well, and it crashes - NTL, if you hadn't already guessed)
