Building a new AMD system, these good parts?
I'm building a new system for my friend, and I got a couple questions bout the mobo and cpu to get. Currently I planing on,
ASUS "A7V600-X" KT600 Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU and AMD Athlon XP 3200+ "Barton", 400MHz FSB, 512K Cache Processor Is that a good mobo & cpu combo to eventually OC once my friend needs more power? and is that in general a good mobo? thanks

mm it's ok but i would prefer a NForce2 chipset with an AthlonXP.I think it's probably a better overclocker as well.
Never really had much good experiences with via AthlonXp chipsets. The DFI NFII Ultra Infinity , Epox EP-8RDA6+ Pro and the Abit NF7 rev2 are all great AthlonXP mobos. I'd probably choose the Epox because of the newer chipset that supports new technologies like SATA and Gigabit ethernet. The DFI and Abit are just NForce2 boards the overclock very well.

plus both those mobos use dual channel memory, i was told the athlon xp doesnt take advatage of this so its potentually useless in this case.

It`s no problem to have an ati card on a nforce mobo. but why don`t you get an athlon 64? The A64 2800+ is cheaper than an XP 3200+ but in most things faster.

if you want AGP bugs, instability, hangs, low memory bandwidth then go for the KT600
but if you care from stability and performance go for the nForce2 based mobos |

In games the A64 2800+ is about 10% faster than the xp3200+ and i think it would be also a few $ cheaper.

If you're going the 32-bit route I would definetely get an nForce2 motherboard (Asus A7N8X-E or DFI NFII Ultra Infinity). As for the CPU you can easilly get a 2500+ Barton and OC to 3200+ by setting the FSB to 200 MHz, unless you want to break 3200+ (by a lot) that is.

AMD Athlon 64 2800+, 512KB L2 Cache, 64-bit Processor - Retail CHAINTECH "VNF3-250" nForce3 250 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 CPU -RETAIL that's $215, versus $256 for the xp3200/kt600 setup Overall, I'd say the 64-2800 would be more or less as fast as the xp3200. It would be a bit faster in some things, like games, and a bit slower in other things. Not enough of a difference that I think you'd really notice, except maybe in some rare cases. But, the price for the a64 2800+ setup I showed is noticeablely lower than your xp3200 picks. I only found a couple of examples of what you asked about: a64-2800 and xp3200 in "new age" games (the a64-2800 is the "Athlon64 1800MHz S754" in the first one):
