4x AGP vs 8x AGP

Hello, I recently found out that my mobo only supports 4x AGP. I was planning on upgrading my video card from my radeon 9700, to a radeon x800 xt platinum.
I plan on using it for next-gen 3d shooter engines, mostly Half-life 2.
My question is, first off, will it even run on a 4x AGP slot, I've seen the box of the platinum and it says 8x/4x, but when I look at sites it says its strictly only 8x AGP. This is kind of confusing me, isn't it just backwards compatable?
Also, would I still get great preformance out of the x800 xt platinum in new age engines like Half-life 2 running at 4x AGP?
How big of a difference is there between 4x and 8x AGP?
Thanks a lot.

Well first off welcome to DriverHeaven!! About your question, yes it will run on your mobo, but the thing is with these new vidcards if you have a "old" slow CPU/System you wont see any major diference from your previous card cuz your system wont handle your card the way its suposed to run. I would recomend you upgrading your mobo/cpu/ram first and then buy a high end card. Its like runing a Ferrari with a sh*tty engine, it not the same.

hehe, thanks,
about my system, I'm pretty sure it should be able to handle new age games, atleast i think, Its a dell dimention 8250, has a P4 2.4GHz 512k cache, and I believe 533mhz FSB and I got 1gb of RDRAM PC1033. do you think my system is capable of preforming well in the new engines?
thanks again.

Well, it "should" be able to handle new age games, but like i said before, its not gonna take full advantage of the card, games like Doom3 are very system intensive games, specially Cpu/Ram/Vidcard. I see people every single day in driverheaven complain cuz they got a brand new spanking high end card but they see no diference in performance in games, and thats cuz there system just cant handle the new high end vidcards "power". But its up to you in the end, and this vidcard is trully and amazing piece of hardware.

you should be fine...ive got my 6800GT in a similar system, and score about 11.5k in 3dmark03 (hope to break 12k when i get rid of this crap ram). you could OC your cpu and get a good deal more out of it.
