The memory should be okay in your system, but I had the same problem on a comp w/ 256megs of ram as it would try and increase the pagefile. Run memtest and make sure everything is okay. also, do you get any errors while this freeze and go happens? Have you tried to alt + tab out of the game to see if anything is happening. Does the HDD or CD ROM spin up during these times? Do you have items running in the background? Next time this happens, alt +tab out of the game and cntrl alt delte. See what processes are running and make sure nothing is taking up too much cpu. just some ideas hope some of these help you determine whats wrong

sound!?? uninstall your sound card and try again without sound....
maybe its an irq conflcits. if it works without the soundcard try another pci slot.
are you sure all drivers are installed correctly?

weird..... lower the latency on your ram....
try reinstalling the drivers... windows even....
good luck......
if nothing works get a new mobo, new cpu, new ram,,, just return everything and get a different system... maybe one component doesnt like some other components.. its extreme but happens sometimes..

can you try some more games? I'm just wondering . . . so far it looks like Direct3D games have the problem, and OpenGL don't . . . just wondering

Did you try DH-driver cleaner and Cab cleaner? I would seriously do that if you haven't. Let cab cleaner run, it took a LONG time when I did it, you just have to let it keep going, it will eventually stop- don't stop it manually. -only then reinstall latest WHQL Nvidia drivers.
Sounds like a really pesky problem, weird that it does it in DirectX games but NOT OpenGL games. Very strange indeed. I would say reinstall directX AND make sure all your motherboard (northbridge and south-bridge/ IDE/ SATA) drivers are all up to date and cleanly installed..
Since it only does it in DirectX games it seems like it must be a software thing. Just some ideas. Good luck man.
