I'm not on top of Intel that much, but those are the boards I've heard about more than others. The price for those two should be about the same, depending where you buy. (some places can charge $20+ over others) But you can buy any of the P4C800 or IC7 series, they should be about the same performance, just with different features between the P4C800/Dlx/-E Dlx and IC7/MAX2/MAX3 etc.. As for performance between Asus vs. Abit, not quite sure. One might be slightly ahead, but not enough to matter. One thing I have heard from tastyweat though, that the IC7-MAX3 seems to be the most stable overclocking board.
Anyway, like I said, I'm no expert on this subject, hopefully some Intel guys can offer more info on performance, etc.

i run 2 asus p4 boards at home... Great boards no problems and alot of overclocking features if you want them... If not like my wifes computer, then it is still a rock solid board with no problems. I had an abit before this and had no problems with that one for 3 years so either way you are going to get quality.

asus is a rock solid company, as is abit
i have had one issue with each:
my friends abit board shipped with a bad RAID controller...but they had a wonderful RMA service and he got a replacement in a week
my asus shipped with the wrong default jumper settings, and the settings weren't accurately drawn in the manual either, but i found out how to fix it on the forums over at 2cpu.com
other then that we've both had our boards up and runnign problem free...me for monthes, himf or years
