Default Post Screwed partition :(

Hiya's..

fiddling with partition magic (for dos) this evening.. it's a 60gb drive and the partition table 'was' set up as follows :-

(Primary Partition) C drive: 1gb (win98)
(Secondary Partition) : remaining 59gb
(Logical) d drive: 2.5gb (winxp)
(Logicial) e drive: 56.5gb (data)

I used partition magic to remove some of the free space from E: with the intention of making the free unpartitioned space a new partition (F totalling 1.2gb, this was for the purpose of a third OS install (win2k) .. i dont feel that going into detail as to why i've chosen to use a third OS is important... what IS important is that during the relocation of the new partitioned space... my system locked up, had to do a hard reset (in a lot of fear)

upon rebooting.. my e: is now gone... winxp see's it there in disk management as the full 56.5gb however there is no drive letter assigned to the partition.. and in the details of the partition it just says:

(Healthy) (Unknown Partition)

So yeah, I now have an inaccessible partition with quite a lot of important data on it.... I tried using ndd.exe (for dos) but that didn't pick anything up / notice the screwed partition) .. and back in pqmagic (the program which locked up and caused this in the first place) ... it see's the partition as being corrupted and i have no option to do anything apart from delete it..

panik mode: suggestions people??? any really nice software out there to help with data retrieval?

Any guidance/support would be extremely helpful... thanks in advance everyone...

Default Post Screwed partition :(

XP wil see that partition as (Unknown Partition) becoz you told PQ-magic that you want a new partition for install a OS.

in XP unlike 2k, you will not be able to assign a drive letter to the new create partition..
if that partition means for OS installation.

it may or may not be a bad partition just yet becoz you dont know for sure..

i think, i can fix this for you if you got a copy of PQ-magic Windows version.

I believe I do have a copy of partition magic v5.0 for windows or something like that yeah, not the latest version but i'm sure it'll suffice... that is, if you think it will help me with my problem?

I cant assign a drive letter to get my data partition back because winxp only understands it as an (unknown partition) .. instead of a (fat32) partition which is what it is.. when i right click on the partition in disk management, the option to assign a drive letter is greyed out :/

Ricochet,

you are telling me.... all the things that i already known.

you wrote "fat32" instead of NTFS... if it's a fat32..
can you see that partition from win98 ?.. (i dont think so).

NO NO,.. PQ-magic 5 and your Dual-Boot.. will not get along at all.

only if you willing to remove dual-boot and may cause even more prob for you..
so i'm not going to go any further on that.

will concentrate only for how to get the data back... at least for now.

I'v asked you b4.... are you on a home network ?
if yes or you can get hookup with a networks.. i can give you the name now...
it's a software called Winternal AdminPak3.
for how? its work and where? you can get it, i need you to talk to me on e-mail.

Default Post Dumba** Partition Magic...

Well, was planning to put all the movies I have onto a 20Gb partition so I went on to merge two 10Gb partitions...
Heh, everything went fine up to 99% when the process stopped and PM giving me an error message saying something 'bout an overhead missmatch (don't recall exactly) and it literally killed the two mergable partitions and one more as an extra (guess it was hungry )
...so I was left with an extra of 30Gb of unpartitioned space; fortunately I did my BackUp

Any ideas as on what happened?

errr, as I said before, I appreciate the help you tried to give me but it turned out I was able to work the problem out, apart from not backing up prior to the realignment of the partition table I knew exactly what I was doing... it just took some time to work out my options thats all (which is why I came here) .... in the end I am not misunderstanding anything, I knew exactly what my problem was and therefore was able to work out the best solution..

at the end of the day, problem is solved and data is back..

thanks for help everyone..

Cheers,

Ric

Mickapetch:-

" well, you came in with a "panik mode:" "

- Did I? - I came in here to clarify my options.. sure I was panicking over potentially lost data initially, but i've only myself to blame for that as I didn't bother to back up this time around.. (I usually do).

" am i not polite enough ? or what ? "

- Did I ever make a personal comment towards anyone in reference to their attitude? I don't believe I did.

" what's wrong with the word "misunderstanding" "

- nothing is wrong with the word "misunderstanding" .. it is used in many vocabulary's on a daily basis.

" i did admit it eventho, i didn't got to. "

good for you pal.

" hey! just give me what you got... out loud man "

- Give you what i've got? uhm, I have a pc without any further problems.

" & you know what..
for that problems of your... i can get it fix real good in just a few flips !! "

- Did I not make myself clear enough yet? I ended up solving the problem myself.. but as I have already said at least twice... Thank you for trying to help...

You seem to have an obsession with fixing a problem which is no longer there, would you like me to bash the sh't out of the old 486 in the garage.. ship the 20,000 broken pieces to you.. and let you solve that for me?

Cheers,

Ric

Any guidance/support would be extremely helpful... thanks in advance everyone...
<sigh> some people can't read.....

as my previous post stated and admitted... INITIALLY i was panicking sure.. just as anyone who has potentially lost their data would do, but after some fiddling around I solved the problem myself shortly after making the initial post.. in which there was no further need to reply to mikapetch's posts... apart from the fact that I found him very difficult to understand.. perhaps he is foreign and doesn't speak/type english very well? I dont mind but I just politely said to him that he was misunderstanding my problem... is that such a bad thing to say?? I even said "thanks for the help and advice" SEVERAL times...

let it be the end of this...

cheers,

ric

*drool* = remember the pics when you were a baby and your whole face was somewhat wet? Basically, you were drooling...
Or a feeling when you haven't eaten for @least two days and suddenly a huge steak appears in from of you and you can feel juices pilling up in your mouth..(?)
