You need a firewall mate.

Both McAfee and Norton do firewalls, which you can purchase with their respective antivirus programs.

There are other dedicated firewall software as well such as Zone Alarm which you can download for free.

There are many others as well but I can't think of them all, plenty of the other members will know about them so hang around and you'll get the answers you need

Actually, I was looking for points for my assignment. I can't think of any besides firewall.

Hmm. Tough one that. We have machines at work which use software routing. Kerio WinRoute firewall. It uses NAT to route the IPs and this makes it effective in stealthing out PCs connected to it, but again - its just a firewall. Not sure of any other software you could use for security.

Firewalls both software and hardware, IDS (Intrusion Detection System) used to watch network traffic for viruses, DoS attacks and the such.

Their is a tool that I use to evaluate the lvl of updates on a system. The Prog is called GFI LANGuard. You can use it free for 30 days but what it does is it scans systems to see what lvl their are for patches and the such. I use it here at work to eval systems. It not only checks for patch lvl but it also can tell you the users on the mach, how old passwords are, if IIS is running and loads of other usefull info.

for safe internal network with network file shareing and with internet acess
you should have a firewall/router/nat device
connected to a linux machine running with ip mascurade( as a internet gateway),
conneted to the inside network of windows machines
a firewall and anti virus on each pc

normal setup would be a router and then home network with firewalls but the above is the safest

even if you did all that? you not 100% safe
not to meantin you must juggle security with performance
