Cpu running much slower than expected

OK guys for those of you who have known me for some time know there usually isnt anything that I cant fix.

well I finally have found something.

I just ordered in a 1700+ from an online shop

When I installed it and started up the machine sure enough it was detected as a 1700+.

Install Windows and its detected as a 1700+.

Install the Chipset drivers and on reboot its detected in the BIOS as an AMD Athlon 933MHz CPU.

I checked the FSB and its at 133 so thats correct.

However the multiplier is wrong.

The multiplier is now stating its a 7 rather than the 11 that it should be.

The motherboard is the Giga-Byte GA-7VT600-L

It uses the Via KT600 NB and 8235 SB.

This board has no dipswitches for multiplier settings and it doesnt have any BIOS settings for them either.

Anyone have a clue what could be causing this?

Im about to update the BIOS to see if that will help any at all but Im not holding out at all on luck

If you require more advanced BIOS settings, please go to “Advanced BIOS” setting menu.To enter Advanced BIOS setting menu, press “Ctrl+F1” key on the BIOS screen. Hopefully you'll have access to more options.

yup

all of my boards are giga-byte so I know that one pretty well

I thought about that but really this board doesnt have any sort of advanced CPU controls really other than voltage.

Its really strange but I also tried entering my CPUID into the AMD CPU Identification Utility (its unofficial and hosted off of a webpage) and it comes up with a blank when I enter in the CPU codes.

Says not a valid ID string which is really odd since every other CPU I have ever entered has been a good one.

Now Im really starting to wonder if I didnt get a bunk CPU from the vendor because I took a look at the CPU and it looks like the letters are very very slightly smeared which Ive never seen on an AMD CPU and the letters for Athlon dont look like the letters on any of my old AMD CPUs either

Now Im really wondering. The order was from PC Memory Stores who have a really high reseller rating (however I just discovered they have the same address as Enet Marketing which is known for bad crap like this)

Man this is just really odd.

have you tried the Gigabyte Utility for overclocking in windows, I don't know the name of it, but try and force it to work properly

or if worse comes to worse you can always try a pin mod to make it work at the spec speed you want http://www.ocinside.de/index_e.html

lol... neon cowboy know of my similare experiencs...

I have this EXACT board... actually 2....

Check the 100fbs-auto dip switch on the board and MAKE SURE that is indeed push the full distance..... for some reason... on my motherboard i had it sitting at 100 for my duron 950.... i replaced some ram... check everything over before fireing it up... only to be greated with nothingness and bleeps.... simply lightly touching the dip switch... fixed it up...

Then i got a 1600+ amd athlon.... installed it..... fliped the dip switch over to AUTO and fired it up... bios said 1600+... windows said 1600+... then suddenly i experiences the same thing as you... only it was 133fsb x6.5 i think

once again... all i did was touch the dip switch... and if worked fine again..... I think the switch is a wee bit touchy... or just plain odd... as it kinda doesn't make sence on how this would effect these things...

BTW... although the board is decent... it pretty terrible preformer and ...just overall .. cheap... good enough to get something running.....
