Default Post Hope this is the right section!

Hopefully this is the right section to post this question.

I just went through the old format/re-install Windows XP and I am having problems staying connected, via the LAN.

When I log on, the connections are rock solid with no problems at all. But after about 5 or so minutes I start getting lock ups and Explorer (Not Responding) problems. Then have to reboot. I have formated the HD twice and with the same results.

I am using ICS off my old machine, which is working fine. It seems that my NIC is what is causing the problem on the new machine. I am about to get a new NIC just to make sure, Linksys LNE 100TX, but wanted to see if anyone has had this problem or something like it.

Here's the Specs on my systems:

Old Machine: (mainly for DSL connection and Firewall)

AMD K6-2 3D Now 500 Mhz
Tyan Trinity AT MB
384 Meg (PC100) Ram
Maxtor 6Gig HD
3DFx Voodoo 3 64meg Video Card
52x CD-Rom
Iomega 100Meg Zip Drive
Creative Labs Soundblaster Live! Value
Westec DSL Modem
Modem Blaster V.92 (Used for back up if DSL goes down)

New Machine

AMD Duron 950 Mhz
ECS K7S5A MB w/ SiS 900 NIC and AC97 Codec onboard
512 (PC133) Ram
Western Digital 45Gig HD
nVidia Gforce 2 MX400 32Meg
Ricoh 6/4/40 CD-RW
Aopen 16x DVD

Common - Via KVM Switch

MAG Inovision 19" Monitor
Windows Keyboard
IBM PS-2 Mouse
Linksys 4 port Switch

Any help would be really appreciated...

When explorer locks, are you able to ping the ICS machine?

Hmmm haven't tried that. But I don't think it will return anything. Seems like it always happens when I try to access one of the networked drives. If I open up My Computer or ( I normally use PowerDesk 5.0) something to access those drives, it locks. BTW PD 5.0 is just a small program that uses the Explorer calls to open, save, move, etc files.

I watch the switch and there is no activity at all between the 2 units during these problems.

Funny thing is if I access the Net with IE or someother net program, ie Outlook, everthing works fine. It is only when I want to move, save, get files.

BTW, just got back from BestBuy and got the LinkSys NIC. They had it on for $14.99 with a $10 rebate. Pretty good for a 10/100mb NIC - only $4.99 and from LinkSys. Will try that tonight.

But thanks for reminding me about the Ping and I will try that also.

Well it wasn't the NIC and I can't figure out what is going on.

I did like you said and I was able to ping the other computer just fine <1ms TTL.

But it continues to hang when I open Explorer or PowerDesk. But is does open after about 3 or 4 minutes. My email program works fine using the ICS.

It has something to do with the networked drives. And only happens after about 10 or so minutes after boot up. I guess after it does what it is doing, it is ok. I just checked it and everything is working fine now.

But as I said the ping worked just fine. Thanks for the tip...
