PCI Express & SLI

Remember Scan Line Interleave from 3Dfx with their VoodooII cards?

Well I was just thinking. If PCI Express motherboards have more than one indentical slot such as the PCIe slots, does this mean that the vid card companies could start offering the option to connect 2 identical video cards in the same rig to offer huge increases in performance. Imagine 2 r420 cards running together, one rendering the even lines and one rendering the odd lines on the screen. Would that be possible?
