MPEG to AVI or DivX?

I need some sort of converter or encoder to take my 2.7 GB recording of 'Conan In Toronto' and make it into an AVI..or smaller. I have no idea what to use. I've done AVI to VCDs and what not..But I don't want to make it into VCDs or DVD..Just a smaller file. (Basically pass it through some sort of compression) Help?

I'd say Xvid, I've come to trust it more than Divx. Download a program called virtualdub and make sure you install the Xvid codec, open the video file, go the video tab make sure full processing mode is selected on, you should be able to leave the audio alone, but if you don't then you can do the same thing except on the audio tab.

When you have full processing mode checked, go back to the video tab and go to compression, go to compression, select xvid (or divx if you'd rather stick with it) and configure it to select your bitrate. After that's done go to the file tab then save avi and let it go! Wheeee!
