HD's Suddenly Quiting?
Someone posted a thread... "HD taking a crap".... days later... i'm getting odd things starting to happen...
Both my 30GB drives are well kepted... never have a problem....
Anyways.... i'll be sitting there working... and without notice or anything... i can hear... ONE of the hd's Spin kick in and spin up.... this being very odd... as not only do i have settings turned off for auto shutting down HD's... but i'm using the bloody machine.... (playing music which comes over a network on my server).... and working on some images...
What's really odd is the fact that these drives are in RAID 0 more meaning... if one hardrive quits/fails..... my whole machine should crash.... but that hasn't happened yet... it hasn't even shown signs of problems...*yet*
Also.. has anyone heard of a weird kinda Schreechy grind bell kind of sound come there drives?... it almost sounds like one of the warning beeps from a computer... only... more metal sounding...scrape..
I've heard it before.. and it happened with one of my 40gb drive i had... it just finally stopped working.... be in windows.... and no drive would be there.. then suddenly.. it would appear.... next moment... you booting into windows only to find out that on bootup... it says the IDE drive has failed... (blah blah blah).....
I think i might have to pack these up before i get to far along with some work i might be doing...
(me loves futureshop though).... Replacements... instantly.... NO CHARGE..

I had that happen with my 20GB Maxtor I just RMAed (got another 20GB in return though ). My 160 was quiet and just all of a sudden sectors started going bad but if you listened to the system at boot you could hear a faint scrape. I would save/backup what data I could just to be safe....I didn't and I lost all of mine.

At least it's not clicking..
Or chirping..or sounding like a meat grinder. I'm serious all these noises were heard by me personally. My friend's HDD makes a chirping noise like a bird..after awhile it stops. My Quantum sounds like a meat grinder when doing major accessing. Oh~ these old HDDs..

I like the convenience of onboard RAID and most higher end mobos these days have good ones. From personal experience

Mine did that a couple of weeks ago - I lost everything I though it was a virus but I'm more inclined to think it was too much for the PSU - I had just added another HDD and another CD-ROM.
All seems ok now.
I'm going to wait until I've had them nearly a year and then RMA them if it happens again.
