Which is faster?

At all default settings no OC or tweaking which one would you say is fastest?

the 2.8GHz P4 with HT with 3200 DDR or the XP3000+ with 2700 DDR

For most things id say the Barton 3000+. Perhaps ripping Mp3s and video editing the P4, why you ask?

I think the AMD would be faster.

Just exploring options, I have a chance to get my hands on a Dell Dimension 4600 with a 2.8 P4 with HT 120 Gig HDD, 256mb DRR 3200 (2x 128mb) sound card, nvidia 128mb 5200 (yes it would come out ) New in the box. Dirt cheap!!! I just wonder which would be the better PC, it or mine in my sig.

The HT chip without a doubt. Once you use HT, you will never turn back. Sure it's not literally dual chips, but if you like to multitask, the HT chip will rock. For example, if you want to run something like seti and use something like Photoshop at the same time, you can!

For general use the Barton is faster, ive used both quite extensively. when you go into specific areas like I mentioned above or using the HT (which for me is a waste of time atm generally - if you want that get a dual processor setup) for other specific multitasking then you see the P4 leading.

Im talking about stock here btw.

yeah - like Zardon says - for general use the barton will be faster - but if you wish to multitask / encode video + MP3s alot - then the P4 would be the better bet - it all depends on your use of the computer. But for gaming - the barton all the way

Well guys so far this new Dell 2.8GHz P4 with it's 800fsb is faster with only 256 mb of 3200 ram in it than my XP3000+ was with 512 mb of 2700 DDR.

At stock speeds on my 9800 Pro I got around 500 more points in 3DMark 2001 than I did with my XP3000+ with the card OC to 405/351
I would have OC'ed the card but I don't have an overclocker installed yet.
Now granted my XP3000+ is in a Compaq and I know that there are a lot of you out there that can blow my scores away with your home built PC's, And that's great!
But I'm real happy with this $300 Dell
And the Dell is a lot quieter than the compaq was

Trying OCing it.

P4 C chips O/C very nicely. With stock cooler and no (minor) Vcore adjustments.

Edit: Do Dells even let you change the FSB?

And then they can post the A64 links. It is annoying however for those that commonly say a 2200+ outperforms a 2.8 HT
