Whats your internet connection?
Thought we'd just see how much juice you guys have in your modems
Cable Modem Broadband A connection through an ordinary coax cable through your digital cable provider is the easiest and most common way to connect to the Internet at high speeds. Most connections average about 400K/second download and 128K upload. Cable's largest advantage is its availability and ability to produce multiple upstreams (when sending). The biggest downside to a cable connection is the slow- downs you'll experience during gluts of service when several people are sharing the network. Expect to pay around $40 per month for this service, I use this service and it's very nice!. Digital Subscriber Link (DSL) This is a connection using your phone line and a special modem. You have to be within so many feet of a phone station "hub" and your line has to be of a newer type to qualify. Good portions of the population (especially in urban areas) match these criteria and can get a DSL connection. The modem uses a sound frequency well above the human ear's limits and will not interfere with normal telephone operation. Most connections average about 400-650K per second in download (some are faster) while anywhere from 128-256K in upload speed is available as well. The biggest downside to this type of connection is the availability. The biggest boon to this technology is its reliability and that network slow-downs are less common than with a cable connection. Satellite (HST) This is the most expensive alternative for getting a high-speed connection to the Internet. If you live in a rural area or a spot where other options are not available then this is probably your only hope for a high-speed connection. These come in two varieties, 1-way and 2-way. One-way satellites are like television receivers: they only accept signals. You'll still have to use your modem to connect for uploads. A 2-way connection, however, both sends and receives and is telephone-free. Average speeds for this type of connection are 600K and higher for download and 128K for the upload. Averages tend to be higher because there are far fewer users on the network to slow things down. The biggest up side to this technology is that it is available just about everywhere. The biggest downside to this type of connection is two-fold: price and reliability. Expect to spend $600 or more for the equipment and another $50 or more a month for the connection. You'll also experience down time (which will not be reimbursed by the ISP) during severe weather (called "rainouts"). Most satellite providers provide a dialup backup service as a part of their plan. Dial Up This is a simple type of connection. You just require a normal phone line and a modem (about £30). It's also the cheapest. It uses your existing phone line to make the connection, and therefore you cannot make normal telephone calls whilst connected to the internet. It's a slow connection speed, taking about 15 minutes to download a 5MByte file. ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Network This requires extra technology to split your phone line into two channels, and hence incurs an installation cost and setup fee. It's slightly faster than Dial up when one channel is used, and about 3x as fast as typical dial up speeds when both channels are used. If you use both channels, you cannot use the telephone at the same time, although you can if you only use one channel. The connection speeds are guaranteed, but many ISPs don't support the 128Kbit / sec speed. If you have need of it, a high-speed connection is both convenient and timesaving. If you spend a lot of time online, you should probably look into getting a faster connection to boost your productivity while online. Otherwise, you'll be drinking lots of coffee whilst those Omega drivers download.

Cable Modem. (Motorola SB5100 surfboard)
3000 down/ 256 up but sometimes I get as fast as this: Now that is fast Depending on how I have my settings I can download at this speed. My upstream was just upgraded to a 256mbit/s up- which is nice, it used to only be around 70 to 133- (very slow)

I'm sure Tony means independant media which is freely available on the net and not copyrighted. Otherwise we at DH would frown apon this downloading.

Cable 600/128
yesterday I had 1M/256 but had to drop down due to ££.Anyway over in the UK Cable is currently better than the ADSL, the contention ratio is lower I think 20:1 compared to 50:1, so your slowdown comments are the wrong way around. Also the availablity is the other way around, ADSL is more widely available in the UK than Cable.

I have Comcast Cable with 3Mb down and 256K up. The 3Mb down is currently an experiment for the area.

And when i say downloading games and films and music thats what i mean.
why do you think these company's offer the speeds they do? you think its for mass downloading freeware or sharware? They know why people use it and should accept it.lets see what chance those US companys have in making the same pathetic moves in the Uk as they did there. This country is far more postive in copy law than US, im not saying its legal but they do see the good side of it (i.e free advertising, low production cost) I think for now K-lite user's in uk/Ireland are safe from the US giants. Tony. |

I am using Two-Way Sat. by Direcway....speeds are listed as 512-128........but download speeds will vary from 400k up to 12mb down........up is pretty much limited below 128k to keep people from running ftp servers and things like that.
One downside that wasn't mentioned about this type of connection.......under the contract your bandwidth is limited by what they call FAP or the fair access policy. In other words.....160mb worth of usage every 4 hour period. SUCKS SHIT big time. But it is a hell of a lot better than dial up and I am stuck out in the middle of no where........maybe one day they will run ADSL out here. Another thing not mentioned is the PING rates........they average from 700-1600 on ping rates......and that is why I am not a member of the DH Lan Team......... Hardware.......$535 Service Fee.....$60 a month

my cable is sweet! i usually get like 200-350k download. and 10k upload. (i think they put a "cap" on the sending, for what reason other than to save money.. i dont know) sending files over my connection is such a pain.

currently use dsl.512k bb supplied by btopenworld.happy with the speed of it but would love bwx32's rate but would cost quite a bit.
but would never drop down to anything lower. |

....i think my connection is similare to the speeds that t3 lines put out..... seeing as some benchmarks i have ran..... show it as equivilent....... the other day, i uploaded a 3mb file in less then a second... you have any idea how sweet that is after being on no faster then 28.8kb dial up?.....it's like...... "SHUWEET" as you drool..... and become dehydrated from it......... BTW, i just happened to setup 4 computers on the internet...and we all played UT on a UK (Jolt) server.... all of us at once were getting 90-130ms pings.... removing anyone or everyone would not change it..... man... and only $40 a month....

But it was mainly so other members could learn it maybe different (and any UK readers, which there are, also knew). I knew you post was not UK based ! So the availablity does stand as I was talking about the UK. Geez it's just a poll and I was giving some information to the UK members. |
