Wanting to switch camps.
I've decided to re-engineer my case again and this time I want to use AMD. I'm currently running a P4 2.4b at 2.7GHz. I want a machine which will run faster than the overclocked P4 when just running stock. ie I want a quicker machine that I dont have to overclock. I'm totally confused by the naming that AMD give their processors. I'm under the impression that a 2700 w/333 FSB will be quicker than my P4.
And what would be a really good board to put it in? (must have SATA RAID 0)
Can anyone help me out?

wait for the Athlon 64/fx or whatever it's going to be called. It's gonna rock, if you have to buy a new Mobo and processor.

Your gonna need to get at least a 2800+ barton.. AXP chips are much better when they are overclocked.
At stock speeds none of them are anything too exceptional.

I think the A64s are going to be just a little too expensive and the 3000 might just be a bit out of my price range. I'm thinking 2800 barton, but dont know how much of an improvement I'm going to get with that.

Even if you don't get a A64 it still should knock down some of the other prices on processors.
I went from a AXP 1800 Palomino core w/ PC2100 to a P4 2.26GHz 533MHz Northwood w/ PC2700 last summer. I did notice a boost in speed all around in 2D & 3D apps. However, that November I went back to AMD w/ a AXP Tbred core /w the same ram. I noticed a pretty dramatic improvement across the board, even desktop stuff just seemed quite a bit snappier.

i will consider it when is see it up & running then i will either startup a new thread and follow replies or search others on here.
firstly i will like to see how much of an improvement it will be without.just cost me £352 for new cpu/mobo/ram just being cautious.
cannot oc my existing rig due shit mobo that came as an in store package,u know the type limited connection ports hardly any bios options type.

You should noticed a definite boost is speed mainly because of your chipset upgrade. I had the SIS 648 w/ my P4, and I think it was one of the determining factors in the performance of the system. Do you have any odd "slow" issues with 3D?

most defiantly.fine with older games like quake three.splinter cell/nolf 2 are fine.
games like ut2k3 got a small freeze screen for a split second occasional slow down.
as for mohaa freeze screen as quoted above but only when auto game save request came into play.
tomb raider angel of darkness was very problem ridden.
raven shield poor frame rates.
that were on a sis 650 which is partly my thinking in past post of poor bench mark scores.
absolutely no change in any of the above whatever driver update i used.either chipset or graphics.
i just hope my new stuff is a big difference particularly the mobo were recommended by veridian 3.

9600pro is a very good good card in my opinion, there shouldnrt be a gap too large between 9800pro and 9600pro....so i assume you'll have to score around 18k to beat mine.....also, keep in mind that i have PC2100, stock fan all the way and 2.67 (533) which wasnt a good OCer...

Don't buy AMD unless you plan to OC it- An un-OC'd AMD is a sin.
Just get an NF7-S v2.0, some really fast low latency ram and the best AMD CPU then OC it-

Wait it out, hell you machines not slow anyway)
wait till either intel decidedes what it going to do with it P4 range and the AMD64 is out properly.
Sometime around Christmas would be a much etter time. thing'll have settled a little.

haven't received my new goodies yet,i were slightly grasping at straws for delivery on Monday(when stated in post)looks like it will be tomorrow(23rd).
but still have 2 hrs yet so who knows.
ill see when its running about that score.all previous were lucky to get close to 10k being a little optimistic as well as pessimistic about those scores.

I think I may seriously bear this in mind. I have the machine running at 3Ghz (stable I think) at the moment so I might just not upgrade just yet.

I wouldn't- you could run that rig for another year if you needed to.
