I just have my router's firewall (which is crap, I'm sure of it D-Link 604 ) and I used to not run any Virus program because they are all crap, I still want some performance .... But I found a nice DOS virusscanner which is updated frequently. F-Prot DOS : http://users.skynet.be/six/gpure/fprot.html . I just use it to scan my hd's once in a while. It takes only 1MB and is really the fastest virusscanner I've had . I never get any viruses tho :
-I don't have internet explorer installed --> Opera
-I don't have Outlook Express installed --> Foxmail+Mail Washer
-I don't open any spam nor suspicious mails from friends, got my hotmail account at exclusive (I'd rather have no hotmail account , but heck)
-I don't download weird things from Kazaa
Just a little bit of carefullness can keep those viruses out.
Software Firewalls are really crap too, but if you have to use one you should check http://users.skynet.be/six/gpure/agnitum_outpost.html
A firewall test done by agnitum , it's quite representative tho http://www.agnitum.com/php_scripts/compare2.php
The free kerio or sygate firewall is the best free protection vs hackers following this test
