Guys i'd like an opinion please...
Basically it occured to me the other day that i'll probably never use the 2 serial COM ports or parallel printer port that are built into my mobo (and practically every other mobo at that). Hardware that makes use of them is pretty much extinct now...
So I was wondering if disabling them in the bios will be ok? I need to know before I try you see, because I can't afford windows not booting/going tits up as I have stuff that needs backing up. Are there any adverse affects to disabling them? I just thought that if I don't use em why have them taking up hardware resources...
Thanks in advance

IF you using windows 98/me/2000/xp..... go ahead and disable them.... i've only ONCE had a problem disabling them and finding out that windows 95 just didn't like that idea..... by doing this your freeing up irqs...as well some dmas and some clock cycles.....

Yep disable anything you do not use.
Even if Windows doesn't take a liking to it (unlikely) you can always enable them again

Why do you think you need to disable them? Just because you don't use them now doesn't mean you won't use them in the future ...

Well I don't really, just i'd imagine turning off stuff i don't use will save resources As for using them in the future - unlikely, not used a com port for about a year and a half (parallel port = never ). If I do I could always re-enable them anyway...
Cheers for info guys

Saving resources is one thing, but it's only worthwhile if the resource is going to be re-used elsewhere. You won't save any CPU cycles and if you've got a good ACPI setup you won't be "saving" any IRQ's either.

little less to handle though...... it won't improve your overall system speed....but less things to startup.... and things to be registered...

dont disable them in your bios, that doesnt do much good as they're still taking up valuable case space. Saw them off with a dremel.
