Bottleneck?

Hey all,

Just bought my ATi card last week after having been with nVidia for years, so far im very satisfied. The card is a 9600 Non-Pro, i know i know, not the best but it suits my needs .

Anyway i've been playing Jedi Academy lately and my fps is just crap, with AA and AF off i get about 35-43 FPS with max details, with 2xAA and 4xAF on i get about 29-32 FPS max settings. Is something wrong here? I threw on Jedi Outcast to see if there was any difference and i got the same result . I have all the updated drivers for my system, and this is on a clean install also. I'm using the latest cats(3.7) and DX 9.0b.

Sys Specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
512mb DDR 333mhz (I believe its Infineon)
Built by ATi Radeon 9600
C-Media Integrated 3D Sound

Sorry if this is in the wrong area

Thanks in advance

I don't really see anything wrong with those FPS if you are on max settings WITH AA and AF and you still get 30 FPS... mind you i haven't played Jedi Academy so i dont know what FPS I would get... but play UT2K3 and tell me what FPS you get on that. Then i could tell you if i think you got a lemon

try turning off shadows, and dynamic glow. Those hit the CPU pretty hard.

To find out real fast if the card it the bottleneck drop the color bit down to 16 and see if your FPS dramaticly goes up.

You could also try the omega drivers.

Never did check the FPS on UT2k3, but on Unreal 2, same settings all maxed out i got around 27fps. Only reason i'm asking about Jedi Academy/Outcast is because its on an older, albeit slightly upgraded graphics engine, maybe i was just expecting things to run too smoothly.

@ Craig, thanks i'll try those options, and if that doesnt work i'll try the omegas.

Edit: Turned off the shadows and dropped it to 16bit, 2xAA and 4xAF are still on, fps is now in mid to high 40's, im guessing this sounds about right?

Edit 2: Uninstalled the 3.7 cats and installed the omega drivers, big performance boosts, 48-60 fps now, very impressed

Omega drivers Rock! Also Hardware sound/EAX can hit performance pretty hard depending on the soundcard, I'm not familiar with the C-media, but a suggestion.

Does that apply yet? I thought that only worked on cards that don't have true 32bit color processing...

Most newer cards don't show a difference at all no matter if it is the bottleneck or not... or am i not correct at all?

(maybe i'm just used to the kyro 2.... and am expecting newer hardware to be similare in that kind of way)

Nope Kyro is still the only one, who does all of its Image rendering in 32bit,
(If you remember the infamous NV comments over the Kyro, in which they claimed that you could not get a "16bit boost" out of the Kyro, making the Kyro evenmore useless for gamers than the GF2mx)
