The dumb thing about that 3 fan system is that the remote chance of a fan failing are slim, the chances of 2 fans failing is even slimmer. What they SHOULD have done in maybe put a switch on there and let the customer decide if they want the extra fan on for OC'ing or not. Or even have the extra fan come on only in 3-D mode. Then I can see the point, but putting an extra fan on there just as a "backup" is ridiculous, people are paying for that and it is unnecessary.

I think its a pretty good idea, since they're low noise fans. Would be even better if they let you use all 3 fans at once via a control panel or app.

huh? I think this one is one of the best designed FXs. It's still 15dBA quieter than the stock hsf and with 2 fans you have a better chance of getting air across the whole heatsink. That backup fan also gives most consumers a slight piece of mind, and even if it is pretty much useless you can't deny it will help sell the cards.

Oh yeah~
Look at the size of that thing. I like the tech bag though I care not for a card of that magnitude. I agree that elegant solutions should be found instead of brute force tactics. ATI is great example of elegance. 3DFX was an example of brute force and now NVidia is another example of it

why should they even NEED back up fan? that means there is a good chance the fan might fail? and getting a little bag doesnt impress me lol. if all 3 were working ok, but why the hell u telling us "if either of of the 2 primary fans were to fail, the backup starts up automatically" gives me the impression that this ISNT a reliable card!

It's quieter than the stock cooler.
It looks nicer than the stock cooler.
It keeps the core cooler than the stock cooler.

Well the one thing that really pisses me off about ATI is the stupid shim on the 9700pro- I almost wrecked mine getting the shim off of there- That thing doesn't let the cooler touch the gpu- I heard a review that said the new coolers on the 9800's have a protrusion that allows it to make direct contact with the gpu surface.

My computer got quieter when I put a new mobo and ATI Radeon 8500DV in!
And I had a card without a fan before (ala GeForce 2)

While that cooling setup is neat looking and I am sure does the job, It is just ironic that ATI can cool thier top cards with just one simple fan!

To be honest here guys, the 9800 puts out 2x the heat at the same clocks as a 5900. This more apparent when the 9800 passes the 450MHz mark and begins to boil. With both cards at 475 core the difference is insane. Unless ATi reworks the R350 core they will require some extremely fancy cooling to get up themselves.

That core is no longer going to be used... ATi will be moving to a 0.13 micron die... and a fan will hardly be needed at lower clocks... and even at insane clock speeds the fan that will beneeded to keep the core cool will be smaller than that of the current 9800 Pro.
For proof of what I am talking about ... take a look at all of the Radeon 9600 Pro cards ... I know they are not the greatest of performers ... mostly due to the 4 pipelines vs. 8 pipelines... but imagine double the horse power of the current 9600 Pro... and no fan. none.... as in not needed.
Now clock the whole thing to around 500 - 600MHz for the core... put a nice slow spinning fan on the cooler. All that is really needed.
Now put some 2.2ns Infineon memory on that card.... Clock it up to 400 - 450MHz.
Starting to see my point...? Right now the Radeon 9800 Pro is based on a 0.15micron die... not 0.13 micron. The time for brute force is over... time to look to thinner cores, lower heat disapation... and lower voltages.
The whole idea is to do all of this without loosing any performance. The die size change will bring in a whole new depth to the cards...... I for one will be looking forward to it.

I understand what you're saying and completely agree. All I was trying to say is that at it's current form, the R350 core will never reach nV 35 speeds without a similar monster hsf. I'm not saying that I like nVidias design either, because as you mentioned, the .13 micron die should be capable of running much-much cooler. Personally I can't wait myself to see what ATi releases next, but I hope they update their cores soon. I want something more than a simple refresh and OC of the R3xx core.
