Default Post Overkill solution

If you're still having problems and you've got a spare old PC lying around (386 with 16 meg RAM and a NIC will do the trick) then install then modem on that, network to your main PC and install SmoothWall on the spare PC.

SmoothWall is an opensource firewall product (currently - they're moving to closed source the swines) and is available under the GPL which also means it's free.

It works great with the Alcatel USB modems - I use the same modem at work with this and it works really really well.

This may be a bit overkill for your needs, but it will work

Default Post Those USB Alcatel modems 'Stingray' are notorious

If you continue to have problems with that one, I STRONGLY suggest you get your DSL provider to exchange it for an external Ethernet Speed Touch Home. It will require that you install an NIC card in your PC, but it is well worth it.
I just went through months of headaches over at my Mom's house with a USB Alcatel DSL 'Stingray' modem. Disconnects, Connect-No Surf, No Connects, you name it. Finally the DSL provider provided a free upgrade to the ethernet modem. For a month now, NO TROUBLES period!
If that's not enough, another family member went through just about the exact same thing but didn't wait months to get it swapped out.

I just ordered a new Home 500 Plug & Go (will get line activation on 10th of July) and i used to have one a few months ago. I managed to d/l the 1.6 drivers and i did previously manage to make the damned stingray to work fine on my pc after tweaking some settings in the bios! I actually live in edinburgh so if you come in the city i can give you the new drivers on a cd. Also you need to check this site that talks about security issues and this site that has tons of useful stuff on adsl. If you are interested leave your email on this thread and i'll get back to you.

Glad everything worked out. What speed are u gettin from the connection? Used to get 576Kb (effective 60K/sec with tweaking). BTW i am not scottish, i am greek living in Edinbra (7th year now), closest i get to Hibbs or Hearts games is at the bookies in Rose Street... However if you come by sometime i'll buy ya a couple o' pints!
