you ever heard about baking your video card?

man i came across this where a guy baked his card to fix it check it out..

I'm guessing this is similar to using a heatgun to "reflow" a 360.

From what I understand it basically melts the solder and gets it to solidify again.

But no I haven't heard of anyone doing this and wouldn't do it myself, wouldn't want to lose an oven with a gfx card

I was given an EVGA 9800 GX2 that was not working, I had nothing to lose so I tried this and it worked. The card is capable of some very nice overclocks and is now in my wifes Q9650, GA-EP45-UD3P rig. It has been performing flawlessly since May 2009.

In my opinion, logically if you warm up electrolytes or electrolytic capacitor, temporary you can make them to work correctly and graphic card will work, but only temporary.
I had a few similar cases with DVD players.

I believe it is a solder reflow fix where a broken or weak trace is being repaired. There have been a lot of people that have used this "fix" on dead video cards and the repair is definitely not temporary. Some have even had success with consoles and motherboards.

It all has to do with the solder that is required now. The have to use different ratios of the tin, lead, etc. to satisfy various eco/safty/health regulations.

Unfortunately, the "new and improved" solder degrades over time, and, if I remember correctly, develops 'pockets' in the actual joint which changes the electrical properties of the circuit, leading to failure.

Heating the joint(s) just enough to re-flow the solder gets rid of the 'pockets' and the circuit works again.

people have fixed everything from vid cards to mobos, to RR 360s doing this. the best so far are buying dead 8800 ultras and the like off ebay for next to nothing, then baking them.

A lot of G80's are dying right now. Warranty is over so many people bake them

G92 also has the problems. Main cause of all this is probaly the big difference between idle and load temps. That's why the new cards get pretty hot @ idle and the fan kicks in under load.

well ok, whatever pitches your tent dude..

the baking trick is cool, but i can't help feeling that there just has to be a slightly less dangerous method for freeing the solder up.
i'm forever leaving stuff in the oven for way too long
hairdryer on high heat maybe ? oxy-acetylene torch..?

Yes, this trick is not so new. It seems to work especially well for BGA type memory modules. But I would try freezing stuff first.

there's a thought, i've got a Gigabyte board somewhere that stopped working about a year ago, might have to try this

This is the most awesome way to fix a computer part I have ever seen, we always try to keep them as cool as possible and then it turns out that, sometimes, baking is what they need.

At first I thought that it was a joke and when I saw the discussion here I burst into laughter.

lol after seeing this... i started bidding on a few dead mobos and GPUs.....

a mobo is heading my way with a few bent pins.... $13 aint so bad, $23 shipped

anyone that bakes a mobo report their findings

I must say that I feel the itch as well, although I'd start with a dial-up modem I may have not thrown away for some strange reason, and then build my way up if it works.

i thought i replied to this way back!

well i thought that the pins would be an easy fix.... HOWEVER the pins were so bent on this board that there were many sharp bends and i ended up breaking a pin off.... so the board is a no go.....

its a shame though.... the board is in pristine condition......the ONLY thing wrong is the socket... if only i could replace the socket...

this thing wasnt even mounted in a system... just pulled out of the box.... looked at and put back... all the cables and things are in their baggies and not opened....

even though the board failed, the little goodies that came with it are somewhat of a consolation that made it worth my $20

EDIT: my solution.... http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...name=A97503-ND

now how the heck can i get one.... or a few.... and how do i reflow the board without potentially harming the board's plastic parts...

i wonder if i can replace the Lotes socket on my board with the Tyco above without issue....

HEy

Well i tried 1 of my p4 boards but no joy but was worth a try

Test was a pre heated 100 degree celus and i left it in for 10 min

The good news is nothing melted eg...plastic parts

Both of the p4 mobos have the same prob ,when u clamp the heatsink with the two levers on the top it bows both mobos in the same place "no post"
If you dont use the levers they run fine

That does sound like a broken solder joint, Steve, solder won't melt at 100c..... more like 350c or higher.

350c is too high, I accomplished this with my video card just below 200c, I baked it at 385 Fahrenheit for approximately 8 minutes. There is a small plastic lens on an LED at the I/O plate on the card. I had the I/O plate off when I baked it and when that lens sagged I took it out. After I let it sit and cool I snipped the sagged piece off the lens so I could reassemble the card. It now works fine. 350C would have certainly made a mess of things.

Anyways, EVGA warranty is for life so I wont try it

I was talking about the melting temp of solder..... not baking cards in an oven.
