Bought WD Black Caviar 1 TB but..

As far as I understand, when a local retailer gets the drives from a larger distributor, any warranty claims from the consumer to the retailer are passed on to the distributor. The thing is that retailers in countries like his and mine often choose to wave their warranty rights in order to get a discount from the distributor. Consequently, they pay for all repairs and replacements of products that failed within the warranty out of their own pockets, so they shorten it.

I think that I remember some people saying that they were able to get replacements for devices failed inside the usual, but outside the warranty period given to them by the retailers from the manufacturers themselves, but that is uncertain and would involve sending the device to the nearest country where the manufacturer has offices.

make sure you register your hdd - WD has an online registration form.. get the serial number of the drive. Only then you get 5 years!

Once you are registered you have access to their free disk image software.

yes, that's the catch! - extended warranty means you have to return the hdd to the next service centre and that usually means international courier expenses.

Yeah , I just registered , but on "contact us" there is no middle east office ,so I guess they don't have anyone nearby . Anyway ,I hope I just don't need them

Usually it is Europe & Middle East, so contact their european offices and ask them. It should be either them or Africa.

One thing , I am looking for a program that can hide or password protect any partition (prefer free again )

Found it , Tweak UI . A useful tiny tool that can hide drives from being shown in windows explorer.
