Buying a new processor (A noob)

Please excuse my noobness since I have never upgraded a computer ;[

So after two years of having this crappy compaq with onboard graphics I decided to upgrade it on a budget, even though the mobo seems to really be limiting my choices right now...;/

I replaced the onboard card with a OC radeon 4650 HD and my god, the difference is great. I can play CoD4 so beautifully ;-;

After researching on how to pick out a CPU, I picked out a 5200+ amd dual core 2.7ghz for my mobo. My mobo is a MCP61PM-HM (Iris). After further research...apparently compaq's bios limit the mobo to only accept up to 4800+ (65watts), so I was stuck buying an OEM 4800+ on ebay. Then after more research apparently people were able to install 5000+ and 5200+ on my motherboard. I don't want to risk it so I will just be buying a 4800+. They are extremely hard to find though...sigh -_-

So if you guys could help me figure this out, or possibly show me somewhere I can buy a 4800+ for a decent prize, that would be great.

Also, most 4800+ I have seen are all OEM, so no fan or heatsink. My question is, would my current fan and heatsink cool it? I have a stock fan and heatsink that came with my 3800+ single core 2.4ghz. It keeps it rather cool. 10-15C idle and 30-35C under load. I don't really want to buy another heatsink+ fan as I need my cash for an upcoming game I want to buy..

Thanks ahead of time.

Re: Buying a new processor (A noob)

yup.... current fan and heatsink should do the trick since youre not overclocking.....

just be sure to order some new thermal paste as well
Newegg.com - Tuniq TX-2 Cooling Thermal Compound - Thermal Compound / Grease

look here for directions on applying new thermal paste

Re: Buying a new processor (A noob)

Looks like you are pretty sorted. Keep in mind that if (for some crazy reason. probabpy not since its only a 65W CPU) it doesn't keep it cool enough, a decent cooling solution for a processor like that is generally no more than about $15 including shipping so just keep that in mind for future reference. Especially since you aren't OCing you will be just fine.

You could also look for a 4200+. It's a lot cheaper bit only al little bit slower.

Re: Buying a new processor (A noob)

Thanks for the replies, guys. It is good news to hear that I will probably end up buying some thermal paste to make sure it stays cool.

If you guys could answer one last question. I am now looking at two diff processors. They are exactly the same, except for two things. One is .3 ghz slower and is 90nm, while the other is a bit faster and 65nm. Will there be some compatibility issue with the 90 and 65nm? Or would they both work on my mobo?

Re: Buying a new processor (A noob)

Btw, you can upgrade to a better CPU: Supports the following processors:
Athlon 64 X2 with Dual Core technology up to 5600+ (up to 89 watt)

I thought the board had a S939 socket, but it's AM2.

Yea, that's what I thought too, but the HP/compaq website says up to 4800+ (65watt). Apparently they limit what CPU's I can use with their BIOS or something?

And would you know about the 90nm/65nm thing?

Maybe, and maybe not. The info on that page is probably the ORIGINAL specifications. It's possible that they later released a bios update that would support the faster processors.

I'm runnning a processor on my ASRock MB that didn't even exist when it was first released. If I remember correctly, the fastest CPU it would originally support was the X2 4800+ (which I put in it originally). Now, after a bios update, I'm running a Phenom II X4 940 in it.

It might be worth giving HP/Compaq customer support a call to see if you can run the newer processors on that board with a bios update.

I would agree here...Much better to go with the faster processor if you can.

Re: Buying a new processor (A noob)

I don't know if you guys have ever contacted HP/compaq technicians but they are horrible.

I called and asked if my motherboard would support and 5200+ AMD dual core, AM2, 65nm processor. They said no and told me my mobo didn't support anything over 4800+.

Later I called and asked if it supported a 4800+ 2.5ghz, AM2 socket, 65nm processor, the guy said yes. I called later to ask if it would run on my BIOS and asked my processor, this "technician" told me that 65nm wouldn't work on my motherboard....<_<;;; The call dropped before I could ask him why I was getting different answers. I called back and got a different "technician" and he told me 65nm would work on my mobo! and that 90nm would not work, even though my AMD 3800+ single core is 90nm...

<_<...................

Oh yea, and he told me not to upgrade my bios because my motherboard could malfunction...apparently people's mobos got messed up after upgrading the bios.

HP are terrible!

Bought one of those dv9000 laptops, and apparently after about 3 years they all overheat and die. HP has recognised this problem and aren't doing anything about it.

but i dont want to hijack the thread so:

good luck with the tech support...i would keep digging on google (or just leave it to kris )

dug all over the place but the most i could find are people using Athlon X2 Brisbane CPUs on the mobo, so i guess you can get the 4800+ Brisbane model......

good luck man

Re: Buying a new processor (A noob)

Even if the fastest CPU you can use with that MB is the 4800+ Brisbane, you will see a HUGE increase in performance over the 3800+ single core.

I had one of those puppies in this system, and when I replaceded it, I put it in my #1 son's computer that had a 3800+ Brisbane, and he got a very decent increase in performance.

CompaqSuckz also check your PMs.

Re: Buying a new processor (A noob)

Well, thanks for the help guys. I ended up ordering a 4200+ 2.2ghz 1MB L2 cache dual core. The only different between the 4800+ and that one was .3ghz... It was about 30 dollars cheaper for about the same performance, so I just went with that. It's 65nm, so it better work >:O

OldBuzzard, yea, I have been reading up on the performance and 4000+ to 4800+ dual cores seem to make 3800+ single core look really bad..lol. I am just upgrading to play AION and future games. It should be enough considering the low system requirements for AION. Also, I don't have any PMs o.o I checked lol

Ahh, ok. I was thinking of getting that card but it was out of my budget. With my 250 watt power supply my choices were extremely limited too. The 4650 uses a small amount of watts and give me great performance. I couldnt ask for anything better, though I will upgrade eventually to something even better!

Re: Buying a new processor (A noob)

yea those 4650s and 4670s are better overall than this old 3870......

also, if you like, i can sell you my current 2x2GB DDR2 800 set when my new RAM comes in..... youll feel another large boost in speed going from 2GB to 4GB

Well at the moment I'm pretty strapped for cash and have to buy a power supply ASAP =/ So I might not have spending money for a while. I will see what I can do

The lower end Corsairs are well worth a look at around the same price.

good luck with the tech support...i would keep digging on google (or just leave it to kris )
you know.....my HP overheated and died about 3 months ago (HP dv6000) and they replaced it completely without question. They sent me a box and i threw in the lappy and then they mailed it back for free in a few weeks. Apparantely the nvidia chip in almost every dv6000 produced was faulty and they all had to go back in for replacement boards.

I still hate their company because it took me four hours to get ahold of anyone that knew anything about computers and they apparantely never activated my tech support warranty thing that I bought with the laptop for this specific reason so i had to spend another two hours dealing with that
