Brother's computer died, rebuild time
Alright, I need some help. I haven't caught up with the hardware realm yet, so guidance is needed.
Price limit is $200 with a tolerance of $50 dollars (so let's just say $250 is the absolute max). We need a motherboard, CPU, and RAM. He said he wants to start off with 2 gigs of RAM and upgrade later on. Any suggestions will be excellent, so thanks in advanced. (Note: We're in the US, so New Egg is recommended, but other deals found are welcome)

Re: Brother's computer died, rebuild time
How about a bit more performance that that:
79.99 Newegg.com - ASRock A780GXE/128M AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards 49.99 Newegg.com - CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-6400C5 - Desktop Memory 119.99 Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor - Processors - Desktops Right at the 250.00 high limit, but will be a danged decent performing system. IF he could squeeze the pocketbook hard enough to get 10.00 more out of it, then he could go with this RAM for just a bit more performance. Especially if he might want to OC that sweet 720. 59.99 Newegg.com - CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X4096-8500C5C G - Desktop Memory

Re: Brother's computer died, rebuild time
Then you can better ask what graphics card he has at the moment.
So what parts you already got IEMC?

Going with the Asus board would lay waste to his budget as well. It's $60.00 more than the Asrock, plus it requires DDR3 memory which would cost even more. Nope, for getting the best bang for his buck, the Asrock beats the Asus hands down.

Other than that he's just got the hard drives, disk drives, PSU, etc. This is great, guys. I really like Kris's second selection. Keep them coming. (Question, though: how out of the picture is getting DDR3?)

Re: Brother's computer died, rebuild time
That really depends on how cheap you want to go. There are some basic 2GB DDR3 1333 on newegg for really cheap when you are looking at dual channel AMD stuff also if you are looking at a cheap DDR3 1333 4GB kit there is something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820178238 The main issue being that the board itself is quite expensive as an AM3. but guys correct me if im wrong but couldn't we throw in a less expensive board that offers a single PCIe since hes not sounding like he wants much more?

Re: Brother's computer died, rebuild time
Wow, you just keep bringing the awesome setups.
Thanks procupine. I did find a fairly inexpensive DDR3 board for not too much, I can't find the link though. Anymore help with DDR3 in mind would be awesome. I'll discuss the stuff so far with him.

Re: Brother's computer died, rebuild time
the thing with DDR3 vs DDR2 is that the bandwidth isnt that much different due to the memory controller needing a bit of work, DDR2 is just as good really.....

Re: Brother's computer died, rebuild time
I'll take your word for it :P
This is probably all null, as my brother is just RMAing the board. Turns out warranty was still in effect. Thanks anyhow, guys. I'll probably be asking again in a few months for myself when college starts. Cheers.
