blank screen when inserting a USB device

my PC is really getting on my nerves..

Every time I insert a USB device, my screen goes blank (switches off to standby)

and the computer freezes.

so far i've tried a memory stick, USB TV stick, and a memory card reader.

Yet strangely, I'm using a USB roller ball type mouse with out any problems..

Any ideas?

The problem seems to have come from no where, as i've used these devices before without issue.
