On my own site you can find a limited amount of freeware , trying to keep it clear with the best only.

Be careful. Not all freeware is free. Sometimes spyware and adware is installed.

Visual Pinball is a great freeware pinball editing tool that uses Visual Basic to script the tables. There are many 'real-world' tables emulated already (just about all of them) to download and enjoy. Many even utilize MAME (called VPinMAME) to emulate the dot-matrix display and sounds of many of the more modern tables. The ball physics are top-notch compared to most of the commercially available pinball games in stores. If you are talented in Visual Basic, you can even create your own, or improve upon the tables already out there.
Check it all out, there are multitudes of links to Visual Pinball euphoria through these sites.

http://www.vpforums.com/vptables/
http://www.pinmame.com/
http://irpinball.ztnet.com/
http://www.shivasite.com/
And the two most popular forums to help you get it all going (it can be a little daunting to get started at first) and to keep up on the latest table releases:
http://www.vpforums.com/
http://www.vpfreeforums.com/
I personally have over 500 of the best tables in MY collection and adding new ones all the time. Best of all, IT'S FREE! You've got nothing to lose!
Registration (it's free) may be required to gain full access to some of the above sites.

how about some of the obvious sites?
http://downloads.cnet.com
http://www.tucows.com
The vast majority of their stuff is sampleware/shareware, but there's still a good chunk of free stuff available.
Some (obvious) recommended software:
- Quintessential Player (media player w/ skins...replaced winamp for me)
- Ifranview (a guide is posted in one of the other forums here)
- Spybot and AdAware (spyware removal tools)
- Firefox (best browser available)
- AVG Virus Scanner (the only 100% free virus scanner I've found, good too)
