USB prob
after a lengthy process of elimination i have come to the conclusion that the problem with my usb flash drive is the fact it is 4gb. i have attached other smaller flash drives including my usb mobile internet and they work fine. i checked dos legacy is on auto, and dos recognises the usb flash drive as a HDD, which is standard (i know this because my laptop also recognises it as a HDD). device manager says all ok, even after reinstall. but the only thing not coming up is in "my computer" the usb flash drive is not given an alphabetic letter and is not recognised only in this location. no fault is listed anywheres. i have all the XP updates. MB=P4P800SE with 8 usb's, all with the same prob. any assist will be gratefully received.

Re: USB prob
You know I had a similar problem a few years ago but I can't remember what it was. My singer brought over some tracks on a 4G USB stick and wouldn't open here either. He will remember if I see him on will ask.

Re: USB prob
If you go to Administrative tools/ computer management/ disk management, does the flash drive show up there? Maybe you have to "mount" the drive and give it a letter designation manually.

in disk management it says the drive is in fat32 format and my HDD is NTFS. will i need to format the flashdrive for it to be recognised in "my computer"? it will only format it in fat or 32. i had designated it a letter and was able to open the drive in disk management but its still not recognised in "my computer" when i leave disk management and return to it, the letter i designated to the FD is gone and i am unable to give it the same letter again. |

Re: USB prob
Have you tried restarting the computer with the flash drive in the usb port?
Also, when you do plug in this drive, does windows pop up the "device found" icon in the tool tray?

Re: USB prob
I thought it was something to do with the size or format under XP I can't remember which and haven't seen my friend on in weeks.
Will think on it and some good advise Ty

i have restarted computer with FD plugged in - still no show in "my computer". also tried it in another usb port, again no show. its listed in the tool tray but without an alpha letter. it has a microsoft driver and is "working properly". however when i plug it in i dont get a popup as such, as its not a new hardware, i suspect? |

Re: USB prob
GUESS WHAT! in my last message to Tyrsonswood, i mentioned that the FD has a microsoft driver. this set off alarm bells and this intrepid adventurer set off to swim thru the murky swamp of the microsoft support centre and found a link - A computer that is running Windows XP cannot detect a USB flash drive, an Apple iPod, or an external hard disk drive i pressed the button and after the download i had to restart computer twice. the first restart installed the updates and the second restart fixed everything! WOW i feel like a twat for not thinking to do this before wasting everybody's time! the fault is with microsoft XP updates - they don't take into account for every senario. what god does or can?
thanks to those who gave attention to my distress! |

Re: USB prob
Glad you got it fixed man...... I was finding similar info about the updates and was just about to ask that next, but I hadn't found that MS page that you did with the fix.
Great job!
