Problem with DVD-RW
I don't know if it is possible it was damaged during shipping, but it isn't detected by Windows. It has power, it opens ok, and I checked the cables and they are all fastened. Suggestions?

Re: Problem with DVD-RW
try replaceing the sata/ide cable.... moveing to another port on the motherboard...
last resort.... take it out of the machine and shake it

Re: Problem with DVD-RW
I have similar problems as you in the past.. Sometimes it could just be a simple solution.
Try the same cable on a different slot on the mobo.If that don't work try another cable if possible. The option that worked for my problem was to re flsh the firmware..So try to find if the latest firmware for the drive and see if it will flash.I did need to use another pc to do this.. |

Try resetting CMOS , it worked sometimes when I had the same problem.

Re: Problem with DVD-RW
I decided I don't care enough for it. I plugged in a USB powered (1 usb only for both) DVDRW drive for whenever I need to install something. I don't feel like opening the case again.
I have a bad history with these drives. I have one not working almost every year (different PCs too).

Re: Problem with DVD-RW
Get a pioneer DVR-216 and never have to worry about it..
or get a Pioneer drive with blu-ray support.. and be set for a number of years

Nah, no money. If I had money I would get a BR drive and a few movies. My guess is this will happen in or around 2011.

Re: Problem with DVD-RW
perhaps it's a BIOS related issue? like something dumb. have you checked to see if the IDE/SATA port it's on is set up in RAID mode? if so, remove the RAID option of that port and windows should then see it properly.
and while in the BIOS and you've made those changes (if they were necessary), check to see if the drive is detected by the BIOS.

Re: Problem with DVD-RW
It will be listed, just like your other drives...... often by name because the bios reads the drive specifics from the drive's rom

Re: Problem with DVD-RW
There was nothing there.
I noticed there was an error message while booting something about no hard drive found, though Vista would load just fine. So... Last night I was VEEEEERYYY bored so I opened the case, removed the graphics card and checked a few things. There were 2 problems. 1, two of the internal usb connections to make the case's usb connection work, were no longer plugged in. I placed them back in but they are very loose. The second problem was the dvdrw ide connector to the mainboard was not 100% in place. I have NO idea how it came loose but anyway, I fixed it and now everything looks and runs fine. Including the absense of any error messages. Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Problem with DVD-RW
No kidding, I think EVERY HDD failure that I have ever had on my rig and clients' rigs has been within two weeks of shipping. UPS seem especially rough here in the states with handling. I actually got a box that was all crushed in on the side with a large boot print in the middle of it. My thought? "oh F***ing great the UPS guy punted my Brand New Samsung 1tb drive!!!" I haven't checked to see if it works yet because I am still working but ooooo if its not.

Re: Problem with DVD-RW
btw. did the BIOS detect the drive during boot??? if it did not then it might be cable or SATA cfg related issue...

Re: Problem with DVD-RW
Just a note about the bios, sometimes the drive will not show up. For instance on the Asus P6T WS Pro (X58 chipset) when the controller is set to RAID (and AHCI too) no optical drives show up in the bios except in 1 place: the boot order. Even hard drives don't show up. The only other place to see it during bootup is when the Intel Matrix Storage Controller starts to list what's connected to it. At that point you see what's connected and what's not.

It did not. Yes, it was the IDE cable that was plugged in the mainboard. Not the drive side. I don't know how it is possible, but, meh.
