Need a quick opinion :)

last night my router screwed up and i couldn't fix it. damn, go buy a new router. come home with the new one (netgear wireless rangemax N) and the computer attached to the modem is dead. now the whole houses internet is dead and i can't set up the new router because i can't install the software into a computer.

because i can't be bothered typing much more, long story short i am buying a new computer. specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750 AM2+ Processor
Asus M2N68 AM2+, nF630a, DDR2, PCIEx16
Corsair DDR2 Twin2X (2048MB Kit) 240-pin XMS2-6400(2X1024MB)
Western Digital 160G SATAII 7200 rpm HDD
Samsung 22X DVDRW Black IDE Vista Support OEM
CoolerMaster RC-932-KKNI HAF Black Case
CoolerMaster 500W Extreme (ATX)
Microsoft Windows XP Home (OEM)
Sapphire HD4670 512M GDDR3 PCIE

total is around $1000 (all from Online Computer Store - Umart online Your one stop Computer Shop for computer parts, notebook and new system)

notice the HAF932 case is out of place - putting my old case with the new setup and the new case (HAF) with my current setup (in system specs tab)

Currently i have 6GB DDR2 800mhz, and im wondering what the performance difference would be if i did a ram swap as well and went with 4GB DDR2 1066mhz

EDIT** sorry was not my computer in the system specs that is being replaced** it is my mums

Re: Need a quick opinion :)

Man , I recommend you to look for possible repair for your current rig , It is far better than you are looking to buy. Locate the possible defected piece of hardware and replace/repair it . That's the logical solution in your case

AH my apologies!

My setup in the system specs was not the one that died, it was my mums so this new computer is for her, not a replacement for mine

sorry for that and thanks the for quick reply

Re: Need a quick opinion :)

if it's not for gaming then you might as well pick up a 4350 and get a bigger hdd. or if the budget allows it swap for a 500gb.

Re: Need a quick opinion :)

Well i considered that, but she only uses the computer for internet and word docs

and i'll be taking the old harddrive from the dead ocmputer and putting it into her new one as it has all of her work on it

i suppose a 4350 would be fine.

What do you guys think of the 4gb 1066mhz vs the current 6gb of 800mhz ram ? (system specs tab, not new build for mum)would there be much of a difference?

Re: Need a quick opinion :)

It will be 64bit.

I think the RAM situation is still a bit muddled

The ram in the parts order list (1066mhz) will be going into my computer (specs tab)
and 4GB of my old ram (the 800mhz stuff) will go into her new one.

I was wondering if it would be better to keep my 6GB 800MHz and buy her cheaper RAM

OR

Get 1066mhz with her rig then put it into my computer and give her 4gb of my old 800mhz ram.

sorry if thats what you were answering - just needed to be 100% sure.

the 6GB 800mhx will be replaced by the 4GB of 1066mhz in my rig in the specs tab

and 4gb of the 800mhz will be used in my mums rig. so i get the faster ram to myself

thanks for the replies so far guys

Re: Need a quick opinion :)

That's a tough call 6G of 800Mhz or 4G of 1066Mhz. The 1066Mhz will of course be faster and even with the 800Mhz it runs more efficient on an AMD CPU as I found out earlier this year.

Considering what she is doing with the system 4G of 800Mhz is probably plenty.

Re: Need a quick opinion :)

i would definitely go with the 4GB 1066MHz RAM... 4GB is currently plenty of RAM... considering the fact that most of the programs don't even require that much RAM and that XP is not that good with filling up the RAM properly, imo those 4GB@1066MHz would do the job way more efficiently than the 6GB@800MHz... XP wouldn't know what to do with that much RAM anyway... LOL ... even if it is a 64bit version...

oh, and about the price of the system... i have never shopped online for any kind of PC parts, but that seems kinda expensive... could probably get that system here for about 500, maybe 450 euros...

Re: Need a quick opinion :)

If you are into gaming keep yourself the 6 GB , most games require higher rams if you want more textures details or view distant and the difference between 800mhz and 1066 isn't that much to cry about .

Re: Need a quick opinion :)

yeah, but since he has 3 X 2GB sticks, there is no way to run them in dual channel DDR mode... that would be a drawback... :S... unless he buys another stick of 2GB and run all 4 sticks in dual channel mode...

Re: Need a quick opinion :)

whats the deal with dual channel mode? i know that the i7 supprts triple channel but i never really knew the purpose.

I still think the ram situation is unclear to you guys -- in my system (q9450 and 4870 etc, i would be getting the 4gb of 1066mhz. the 6gb of 800mhz i have in it currently will be given to my mums computer, which is the one i originally posted (7750 and 4650 etc))

So in my current rig (specs tab!), would 4gb of 1066mhz be better than 6gb of 800mhz?

thanks for the replies and sorry about confusions

Re: Need a quick opinion :)

the dual channel DDR mode is a special type of mode which requires identical (in capacity) sticks of RAM to be placed in matching DIMM slots on the motherboard, so that each stick has direct access to the memory controller... basically, it increases the overall bandwidth of the memory modules, i.e. making them faster...

i understood the RAM situation you have... 3 X 2GB@800MHz in your rig, and you wanna buy 2 X 2GB@1066MHz...

as i said, in my opinion, the 2 X 2GB@1066MHz sticks run in dual channel mode would be superior than the 3 X 2GB@800MHz sticks run in single channle mode...
