Thumbs Down! razer keyboard prob

my wife has a razer tarantula(pos as far as we r both concerned). it has had minor problems for a while now- keys not working & prgorammable keys not functioning properly- but it is pricy keyboard & didnt want to just shitcan it.
anyway, now it isnt always initialising on startup. problem is i dont know if it is keyboard or i/o of mb as i am sitting here looking at her kb & all the lights on it are on(wich they shouldnt be under normal conditions) but the comp is of.
i still think it is kb but the lit up thing is kinda throwing me of. any ideas?
& my spare kb is over at my daughters house as on of her kids hosed hers.

That's absolutely normal. The Tarantula is an USB keyboard and most motherboards keep the USB ports powered even after they are shut down, which means that your PC is off but the motherboard still sends power to all of the USB devices. You need to disable this, usually through a jumper on the motherboard.

Re: keyboard prob

thx gracie. thing is it only started this behavior recently, combined with the non intilisation at startup it has to be related. though given wha tu said makes me think kb instead of the usb port now. the other part is that the num lock & caps key are also lit & they are disabled- num lock on post.
gonna have to unplug my kb(& that actually is a hassle with the y my rig is setup) & see wha thappens.

Re: keyboard prob

First of all, I have to say what I always say. Razer are pos products and they can go and touch themselves. They still owe me 100+ euros.

Now, it sounds like a bad keyboard, although it could be something far worse.

The first thing to try is to change the port.
Then you have to change keyboard...
Go and buy a very cheap one, like under $10 just to see what happens, or use the razer (spit) on another pc.

Yeah my brother's Copperhead mouse had a similar issue where it had to be unplugged and plugged back in when the computer was restarted or we were at a LAN and booting up. Sadly, we never figured it out as the wire got wrapped around his foot and it met an untimely death on the concrete floor.

As we said, Razor is a pos company that makes pos quality products.
Just do the next logical step. Don't buy their products.

If in your search you find something like this Abledata: Products but with more traditional key layout and cheaper, let me know.

well after a email dialogue with razer(& some of it was rather silly) they determined that because it has been over 1 year(about 2) there is nothing they can do & recommended that i replace it. wonder if he typed that with a straight face.
anyway, with the amount of problems i have had with the 2 products i have purchased( especially the keyboard, a 2yr lifespan for a kb that expensive is ridiculous & my da mouse didnt even last that long but they did replace it) i will never buy their crap again.

Which is why I only use Logitech KBs and meeses. They seem to work forever, and the only time I ever had an issue with one of their meeses, the first version of the MX Revolution, they replaced it instantly with just one conversation with a tech on their web chat support page.

I know a lot of folks bad mouth the Setpoint drivers, but I've never had an issue with them. I also use UberOptions, which 'opens up' options for the Logitech KBs & meeses that Setpoint doesn't have.

I'm currently using the MX 5500 Revolution which has the Bluetooth version of the MX Revolution mouse and I'm very happy with it. Now, I'm not a 'serious gamer', but I do play a few FPS off line, and with UberOptions installled on top of Setpoint, I can program every button on the MX Revolution to the point that in FarCry 2, the only KB commands I use are the Arrows for movement, the F key for swapping grenades (which I don't use that much anyway), and the Crouch command which I have set on the R-CTRL key so I can hit it with my pinky finger. EVERYTHING else is on the mouse. I have another profile for the HL2 series that does almost the same thing. WHile it may not have the 'response' that some of the 'gaming mice' have I find the MX Revolution to be more than adaquate for gaming. Another plus is that with UberOptions, I can create a Profile for any application that I can find the .exe for, which also makes it a lot more useful. Shucks, I even have a profile for Solitare

You use the arrow keys for movement?
Do you only play doom? :-p

How come no WASD configuration? More keys near them and closer too.

Using the arrows comes from my old 8086 days.

Read again, I DON'T use the keys, as I have everything assigned to the mouse buttons. The MX Revolution has a LOT of buttons

In Far Cry 2, I have them profiled as:

1. Left Mouse (default)
2. Right Mouse (default)
3. C (push button on the wheel)
W. Scroll portion (changes weapons)
4. space
5. shift
6. E
7. Q
8. 5
9. H
11. R
12. F

I see no reason to use keys when I can do it all from the mouse.

Re: keyboard prob

It doesnt sound convenient or better yet, efficient to have everything on one hand. But if it suits you, that's fine.

I used to use arrow keys for movement too, in the 80s up to early 90s, but not any more.
