Need to buy a new Power Supply soon

I have been running on a 300W PSU for quite some time now on this system.

I have previously had 2 480W Antec True Power PSU's in this system.

The first one blew after 6 months of running and the second one blew right on install.

The first time it took the motherboard and CPU with it. The second time I got lucky and only lost the PSU.

I want recommendations on a good Power Supply so I dont have to worry about the computer choking on me at some point. I want it to be dual fan but still somewhat quiet. I dont want it to be adjustable speedwise. Just a good solid dual fan PSU.

I am going to have someone else toss in this PSU just for the fact that since I almost got my ass fried twice now I dont wanna take any chances. (Me has been nervous working on systems since this happened.

I am also planning on getting a new HSF soon and want recommendations on something that will handle my CPU better than a Volcano9 but also wont cost me too much to replace.

I am working on a really tight budget for both items.

Thanks

Oh jesus... I just bought a Antec 430W Tru430 Power supply.. and I will be getting it soon, hope that doesn't happen to me? I REALLY.. hope that doesn't happen to me.. what were your hardware settings Crash (mobo, ram, etc).

BTW: Get either a nice Enermax 400W+ or Sparkle 400W+ or Antec.. (but I dont think you'd wanna try this again.. after 2 blowing up on you).

You could try this one. It's an Allied TRUE 450W Power Supply. I currently have this in my system and it seems to run great although I don't really know that for a fact....

yeah the antecs just went up in a puff of smoke for some reason

well smoke and electrical arcing

at this point I may save up and buy a new case as well

I still cant afford to spend too much but I want to get one that will allow me to use a decent fan setup for ventilation

we are getting a Air Conditioner for our room though so that may help on the heat issues I have

btw eyeguy that Allied looks good

especially the AMD Recommended label on it

I checked that Allied True 450W link, and it says 'good up to 2200+' -- does that mean it wont work with a processor above 2200+ ?

I am currently using it, so it was probably made when 2200+ was king. I don't really know how to check its rails, but the thing has been rock solid so far. I really don't think I could have gotten a better deal for such a strong power supply. Here is another PSU: Fortron FSP350-60BN 350W. It actually can power up to 440W and is supposedly "ultra-quiet." Basically look around on newegg to find a PSU within your budget. I was in a tossup between these two (the Allied and the Fortron) and I made my decision by flipping a coin (real cheap way to make a decision but it was time to order stuff and I couldn't make up my mind....)

i had the PSU from antec go up 2 times

and it never hurt the video card luckily

im really thinking about that allied as its looking really good to me at this point

ive got a few ideas for the type of case that i want

for instance my next one will not have a window....too much air is getting lost on the way for cooling

i want to have it closed on the sides so that the front fans push it all the way and the back fans pull it out and 1 top fan to get rid of the heat that rises

i think all in all when I am done doing what I want to do for my system i should be able to get my temps to sub 35*C for the summer time in the desert and around 25-30*C for the rest of the year. Perhaps lower in winter

Just a quick question. If your PSU were to die and fry your video card, cant you hold the PSU manufacturer responsible? I dont think that it is normal for a PSU to die and fry other parts of your comp.

well I tried calling Antec's "Support"

what I heard from them (2 weeks later after having trouble getting someone on the phone) was that i should contact the retailer that I purchased the PSU from and rma them for a new one

They seemed to feel they have no reason support people who buy their stuff

i believe all they are supposed to be liable for is the product of theirs that you bought

i dont know about any other liability but it should be a max of only 500 dollars if its even a dollar

Crash, why are you going to have someone else put it in? Do you think you did something wrong when the other 2 died? That is a pretty big co-ink-e-dink. I just took my PSU apart today to clean the dust out of it- I also added another fan on the back of it, now it looks like this one: http://www.techimo.com/articles/i58.html - with the extra fan on the inside facing part of the case. I saw the news atricle here: Review: RaidMax LP-6100D 400w Aluminum Blue right here at DH.
I looks like a good one- maybe you should try to find one of those- read the review, it looks like a very high quality PSU. The extra fan on mine seemed to stablize my volts a little on my shit-worthy Q-max 350w (came with my case, I'm getting another one soon too- but this one is doing very very well for what it is- pretty stable volts w/ all this:

1800xp Pal. @ 2000xp @1.82v)
2x 120mm case fans
5x 80mm case fans (3 of them w/ blue leds)
2 WD hard drives 40g-7200rpm, 6g-5200rpm
ATI 9700pro @337/330 (most of time- sometimes 351/337 or more)
fortissimoIII
Linksys nic
52x24x52 Lite-On
floppy

I bet the one on the front page news here at DH would be a great PSU- Maybe you could look around and see how much you can get one for- I bet you would be happy with it- AND put it in yourself, you won't hurt anything.

well its more of a thing of the last 2 times I had the PSU's blow up on me the current almost traced to me

i really dont want to take a chance on having that much power hitting me

everytime i build a system now i actually let my associate turn the power on while im in another room

I just cant get myself to power up a system that i just put together

its a new phobia lol

Im getting a bit better though.....I had to turn one on a few days ago since he wasnt there and i had to finish a repair job

only took me about 5-10 mins to work up the guts

edit- and actually I dont think I did anything wrong.

I think the first one just went bad and the second one was pretty much DOA

Very surprised to hear about your antec’s. For the most part they make excellent supplies and they are under warranty for a 3 years. Also, I have had great customer service with them every time I’ve called regarding broken or replacement parts for my case. However you may want to consider the Fortron 350watt 120mm fan
Quiet and powerful with excellent specs. Fortron makes all of Sparkle's, Zalman's PSU and they make PC Power and Cooling's 300watt and under supplies.

That much power? It isn't going to hurt you unless you throw it it a bathtub whith you in it, when it's plugged in. I've been shocked by 20,000 volts before- ( a few times actually)- in an electro-static paint booth- It isn't the watts that matter, it's the AMPS. A 120 house outlet will wake you up pretty good, but not hurt you to bad by just touching it- A 220 can do damage.

The 20,000 volts I got shocked with was only frations of 1 amp, so I got a little zap- no big deal. You should have absolutely no fear in turning a computer on no matter who built it, really. It;s not going to hurt you at all.

110 house voltage will light you up a bit... but usually it isnt fatal .. unless you get trapped on it. meaning pushed into it... Because of the way that the current makes your muscles react... it will knock you off. 220 on the other hand has enough juice to get your muscles to react the other way... 220 3 phase is ESPECIALLY dangerous... I have been hit by 110 several times ... knocked me down a couple of times... but, I was never hurt... Got hit ONCE by 440 3PHASE!!!! That damn near killed me ... my heart stopped, and I couldnt get loose. Luckily my Uncle was fast thinking, and killed the circuit before the cicuit killed me. It took nearly three weeks for me to feel ok again... 110volt doesnt bother me ... but, 220, and 440 bothers me ... I stay away from it.

I stay away from anything with enough amperage... that shit scares me man, when I was younger I stuck something metal (I forget what it was..) into a socket in the wall (this was in Bosnia -- Europe, they use the 220v) and I got a pretty nice zap.. ever since then I just stay away from touching crap while its on.

That RAIDMAX looks pretty nice... gah, why did my dad buy the Antec Tru 430W...

Logla has a spectacular aura aboutLogla has a spectacular aura aboutLogla has a spectacular aura about

I was modifying an old 300Watt PSU a couple of months ago so that I could run all my fans and cold cathodes independently of my TruBlue 480w.

I had powered it off 30 mins before starting and disconnected it from the mains (UK 230v-250v).

All was going well until I touched something - I don't remeber what. Next thing I know, my girlfirend was waking me up off the floor. I have no idea how the hell it happened, but I got quite a nasty shock and was knocked out. Went to hospital and checked me out and all was well but next time, I'm gonna be a lot more carefull.

Electricity, like many of natures gifts, is very very dangerous to those who don't fully understand it.
