Best Corsair PSU for system

Hi people,
I am planning about upgrading my system with a new PSU.
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
- OCZ Platinum XTC 4GB DDR2-1066 CL5 kit
- Scythe Mugen
- ASUS Rampage Formula
- Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 X2
- Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB SATA2 (3.5" Backplane)
- Samsung Spinpoint F1 640GB SATA2
- Samsung SH-S203D Black OEM
- Antec Twelve hundred
I am planning to overclock the CPU by 30/31 percent.
I heard decent stories about Corsair PSU's and their decent price.
Which Corsair PSU should be the best for this sytem:
HX520 - 83 euro
HX620 - 108 euro
TX650 - 82 euro
TX750 - 104 euro

I think a HX620 is nice with modulair cabeling, but the TX650 and TX750 are less expensive.
I appreciate it that you also motivate your choice

I also looked at the Corsair site and they al have the best efficiency @ 50 % load.

- Bolletje

oo, @ moderators, I don't know if I placed this topic in the right category

You are not going to like my answer but I would put the biggest one you can afford. I put in a HX1000 because I wanted to make sure I had extra power if and when I upgrade or add compenents like 2 4870x2 in crossfire..

Love Corsair's modular cabling

Re: Best Corsair PSU for system

id go with the TX750 since its better sized for your system and pretty cheap......

if a PSU is too big, it loses efficiency because the load is too small.....

stick with the 750

Re: Best Corsair PSU for system

Thanks for the replies.

I know it about the efficiency. I also have the Antec 1200, a case with a window. So it may be nice to have modulair cables since it looks nicer

Is the TX750 enough for a second HD4870X2?

Re: Best Corsair PSU for system

750 quite likely won't quite cut it...... with 2 hd4870x2's... even with 1000 watt.. i think there would be more then adequate draw to keep the efficiency up. (i think those 2 cards alone would draw nearly half the psu's total power)

not completely sure though.... but just considering the system in which i had a 600watt and 2 x1900xtx's and generally similare sytem makup.. and the psu was not able to cope.. and a 700watt was barely manageing...... i'd say 850 at the least probably.

Re: Best Corsair PSU for system

I see... But keep in mind that you also need to look the 12V rails. With a budget PSU these rails are much lower and can't deliver much Watt on it. So I don't know which PSU you had with those X1900XTX's...

Too bad Corsair doesn't have a 850 watt PSU

Agree with you it would make sense to have an offering in 850w range.. big leap from 750 to 1000..........

Re: Best Corsair PSU for system

So the HX620 is fine when I stick with one HD4870X2 ?

You get modulair cables (looks nice with Window Case and it is better for airflow) and it's quiet...

Or am I wrong?

I got a HX520 at the moment with a Antec 900. I am very pleased with this combination

Here's a controversial opinion: A 750W Corsair would most likely be fine with that system, even with dual 4870X2s. Have you read Zardon's review on this site of the HX1000W? It performed admirably up to 120% load. And, being corsair, 90% of the power is right where you need it on the 12V rail.

The TX750 has a single 12V rail of around 690W. Think about your hardware - you're not going to come close to that. A second 4870X2 would be pishing it a little, but reviews suggest that peak power draw of a quad crossfire system would stil come within 690W.

Having said that, I would reccomend against the 520W modular. It doesn't have a single 12v rail, so while the power may be there, you may find it difficult to load evenly. Some people like multi rail PSUs, personally I don't.

Re: Best Corsair PSU for system

i've got the 750 with a single 4870x2 (& q9550 cpu overclocked 26%)

i personally wouldnt consider 2 x2s performance/heat wise, maybe a second 4870 at most

Welcome to Corsair :: TX Power Supply Product Information i also wanted to keep my power draw much lower than peak just to get better efficiency according to those graphs

the 650 only has 2 8pin PCIe cables, not good enough for adding another 4870/50/x2/geforce for physics in the future

Re: Best Corsair PSU for system

I see.

So if I stick with a single HD4870X2 -> HX620

If I get 2 -> TX750 or HX1000.

?

all of em are good but like this guy said go for the biggest wattage to give yourself upgrade headroom
