Missing Ram

Well the trials of my pc continue. Right now my pc has 2 gigs (2 one gig sticks) of ocz pc2 8000 gold xtc in an asus m2n32-sli deluxe wifi ed. Only 1 gig is showing up. In bios only 1 gig shows up, in task manager 1 gig shows up, and ive reseated the ram and changed slots numerous times. Over the last yr and a half with this hardware the ram would frequently just vanish, but would come back after a system reboot or 4. But now it's been about 2 weeks and the ram has not returned.

The place I bought the system at replaced the board and the power supply with the same brand and also reinstalled windows. Oddly enough after they did this for about 3 weeks the 2 gigs of ram registered fine. But now only 1 gig. My psu is an ocz gamer extreme 700w. My cpu is amd athlon 64 x2 dual core 5200+. Any idea what's going on with my ram? Where's the other gig? Running windows xp home. Thx in advance.

It's the CPU anyway since the memory controller is inside it...

ya that's what I meant. Just wondering if the cpu could be the problem.

Well would you say that my options are now to:

a) get another new board
b) get a new cpu
c) run the damned thing over with my Jeep

Get some cheap intel P35 mobo and Core 2 Duo E8400
And kill the old mobo and CPU with your Jeep.

Can't you arrange something with the manufacturer of the mobo if it's bad? Something like they have it back (as it's broken) and you get a better, newer model and pay the difference...

Well they 'supposedly' did RMA the board and put the same kind back in. I dont even rlly know if it is the damned board. It could be the processor for all I know. So they wont take the board back and it seems no one is able to find the real problem.

Temeteus82 do you, or anyone, have a suggestion for me for a new board and processor? Something specific? Im a gamer so I want performance, but Im a stock head so I dont go for OCing sooo the bells and whistles of an expensive board are simply not needed. Your recommendation would be nice.

Well I'm using Abit's IP35 mobo and I've been pleased with it's performance. It does need bios build 18 to support the 45nm CPU's and as I said the E8400 CPU would fit nicely. You would be able to keep your RAM and gfx card

I recommend any Giagabyte intel-based boards. I've never had any problems.

lol even if it's an AMD system i'd have some use for another system, prolly as a file server I'm running a Core 2 Duo E4500 in an Asus P5W DH Deluxe (i975X), yes it's fairly dated but i can still get some really nice frames on it with my HD3850

test the CPU. perhaps it is the CPU's memory controller.

that, or use another board to test both of your memory sticks to make sure that both work fine.

to test the CPU's memory controller, you'd actually have to use another CPU in place of yours, or test your CPU in another board and see what happens.

your CPU in another board, the same issues would occur. another CPU in your board, all these problems would be resolved.

and yes, i haven't gone anywhere. i'm still a DH nut . i'm mostly in the OT and NVIDIA section of the DH forums though.

Well finding another cpu or another board is gonna be hard. Im actually now living about 5 hrs from the biggest centre...lol. Teaching in good ol' rural-ness

Just then I did clear the cmos to see if that would trigger anything favourable, but nadda.

This whole experience is making me hate Asus and AMD though...simply because the problem is with one of them. arg.

yea, that'll be hard then. there isn't any small mom-n-pop style shop out in your area that would possibly have anything to help you out?

but if you'd like (or if you can), do what teme said and get yourself an e8400 and a p35 board .

something like this Gigabyte board and the e8400 CPU might be a bit pricey still, but it's something to consider.

Ive been looking online for p35 boards, but I cant seem to find any. The P35 refers to the chipset? Or am I wrong?

That board looks interesting much thx

Ive always loved Gigabyte...maybe it's time to go back

P35 is the chipset.... the board i would recommend that is both extremely cheap... and easy to use... AND very good performer is a Asus P5K-SE (the new EPU versions are even nicer)....

A intel E2200 will out perform the AMD x2 5200+ any day of the week.

Combined with the onboard Realtek ALC883 HD audio... the board covers your sound as well.....

throw vista x64 on it and you've got a pretty rock solid system that outperforms even some of the midrange models that come from hp/dell etc.

I just recently setup one with 2x2gb ram.. e2200, ATI HD3450 256mb, 320gb WD sata2 hd, Pioneer DVR-212 sata drive, and a coolermaster 500watt psu,

it's a really slick machine..... obviously with the easy ability to throw in much more potent stuff.... supports 8gb ram without a hitch.

i understand that jaded experience... but remember, it's meerly one product.... and considering, you were just unlucky as i had nothing but issues with that same board you had.

My favorite boards are gigabyte atm......

but i only suggested the p5k-SE due to it's supreme bang for buck related performance/stability/capabilities.

It's a budget board that is working VERY well for everyone.

I could point out a relatively cost effective gigabyte board to you... but it'd be more obviously.

I also pointed out the e2200 as it performance similarely to your 5200+

obviously if you are building a NEW machine to make it worth while, i'd suggest jumping for a Q6600 over anything if your going to spend any big dollar that's more then the e2200.

Well Im not building a new rig just yet. Just a new cpu and board wll be in the works. I love the suggestions. And, to be honest I probably will take ur suggestion with that board.

I have 2 sticks of pc2 8000. I know ram is 'supposed' be be reverse compatible. Think there will be any problem with putting this ram in the board you've suggested? I was looking at the specs and the Asus P5K-SE supports up to pc 6400.

Oh and since we're both fans of Gigabyte is there a board of similar quality and price that you know of by that company?

yeah i'd grab pangingjr's gigabyte board model he listed

the P5K-SE supports up to 1066mhz if i recall correctly.... i think the overclocking feature pushes it higher.. but i haven't really played around with much of anything above pc6400.

Well some great suggestions guys; much thx!! One thing I have been noticing though is that ppl are asking about whether or not particular ram will work on certain boards. I've been seeing this all over the place on forums and what not. Are newer boards becoming more 'wanky' when it comes to ram that will and will not work? I know my lemon board has a very strict qvl and ram that 'should' work simply will not. Have you guys noticed anything like that?
