Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

If you have clicked this link , you are either a newcomer to PC building or are someone who wants ideas and a base to start on for your next system.

An example of this would be the computing power of a high end graphics card if your main use for this system is gaming. The graphics card allows the user to see into the game better because the graphics card can deliver a much clearer and smoother image to the monitor.

here are a few different examples of the latest technologies and fastest systems at different price points.

$500 - Entry Level

A cheap, yet powerful tower system equipped with the latest technologies including AMD's latest 790GX chipset and an AMD Phenom X3, while it is an integrated graphics system by no means is it a slouch. Simply add a pair of graphics cards and power supply and you go from low end to enthusiast level performance with only a few upgrades.

Chassis - Cooler Master Elite 335 (US) Newegg.com
HDD - Western Digital WD3200AAKS SATA drive (US) Newegg.com
Motherboard - BioStar TA790GX ATX Motherboard (US) Newegg.com
PSU - Seasonic 300W ATX PSU (US) Newegg.com
Memory - Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) CAS 5-6-6-15 DDR2 800 (US) Newegg.com
CPU - AMD Phenom 8450 AM2+ CPU (US) Newegg.com
OS - Windows Vista Home Basic SP1 64-bit (US) Newegg.com (UK) YoYoTech.co.uk

$750 - Higher Entry Level

This system is a heavily upgraded version of the above system with a superior case with better cooling, faster RAM and a Quad Core CPU, theres also the HD 3450 that can render alongside the 790GX chipset using Hybrid Crossfire, lastly there is the bigger and faster Caviar Black 640GB hard drive.

CPU - AMD Phenom 9750 Quad Core CPU (US) Newegg.com (UK) YoYoTech.co.uk

$1000 - Mainstream Level

In this model, it is based off a completely different and better system because unlike the AMD systems listed above, the Intel systems put out more calculations per clock compared to even the Phenom CPUs, they can also address up to 16GB of RAM currently thanks to the P45 chipset. lastly, Intel systems can be clocked higher than most AMD systems thanks to the superior manufacturing processes and high FSB limit of the P45 chipset. The system also has the latest in high capacity DDR2, 4GB sticks at excellent CAS 5-5-5-12 latencies, room for system capacity all the way to 16GB, more RAM than the average user needs!

$1250 - Higher Mainstream Level

This is a system composed of every component thats the latest and greatest as well as most powerful. This is a system that is built with the Intel Core i7 920 Quad-Core CPU, 2x2GB DDR3 (3 needed for triple channel) and an EVGA Geforce GTX 260 Core 216. A system that excels in all computing categories. It has triple-channel DDR3 support, support for both CrossfireX and SLi. Long gone are the compromises needed to do one thing over another, this is the ultimate platform, compromise nothing. The power supply may seem small but its actually quite within specs, assuming no heavy OCing is done

$1500- Performance Level

This Core i7 system is an upgraded version of the above system, while it still is only running on 2/3 of its max memory bandwidth, it has 2x the HDD performance with the drives in RAID 0 and more GPU power with dual HD 4850s it is very fast, especially for the price

CD/DVD - LG 22x DVD Combo Drive (US)Newegg.com
Chassis - Cooler Master 690 with 650w PSU (US)Newegg.com
HDD - Fujitsu MBA3300 147GB 15,000RPM SAS Drive (US) Newegg.com

Motherboard - Foxconn Renaissance ATX Motherboard (US)Newegg.com
CPU - Intel Core i7 920 (US)Newegg.com
OS - Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit (US)Newegg.com

$1750 Higher Performance Level

This system is yet another upgrade to the above setup. One change in particular is the use of a SAS drive, a 15k SAS drive is by far the most powerful disk drive, even more than the Velociraptors and second only to certain SSD drives. The memory has been changed out to 12GB of CAS 9 DDR3 1333, while the memory itself is slower, the increased capacity and bandwidth makes it a worthwhile trade. The last change is the motherboard, the Foxconn Renaissance is a superior board with 2 more PCIE 2.0 slots, and 2 SAS ports supporting RAID.

CD/DVD - LG 22X DVD Combo Drive (US) Newegg.com (UK) YoYoTech.co.uk
Chassis - Cooler Master 690 with 650w PSU (US) Newegg.com
HDD - Fujitsu MBA3300 147GB 15,000RPM SAS Drive (US) Newegg.com
GPU - 2x Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 (US) Newegg.com
Memory - 3x G.Skill 4GB (2 x 2GB) CAS 9-9-9-24 DDR3 1333 (US) Newegg.com
Motherboard - Foxconn Renaissance X58 ATX Motherboard (US) Newegg.com
CPU - Intel Core i7 920 Quad Core CPU (US) Newegg.com
Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit (US) Newegg.com

$2000 - Enthusiast Level

In this build, the main performance boost comes from the addition of a second SAS drive, putting this in RAID 0 would double the throughput from the drives to the system, making all tasks requiring the HDD to feel snappier and all programs are installed in a drive so basically the system in entirety is faster. The chassis has been changed to a larger, more spacious case with better expandability. Since there is nothing wrong with the 690 case, if the extra size of the 932 doesn't suit you, the 690 is still a good choice.

Part II

$2500 - Higher Enthusiast Level

In this build, the 2 4850s have been upgraded to 2 GTX 260 Core 216s and the HDD has been upgraded to the newest Intel X25-M SSD, one of the highest performing SSD on the market, having beaten the SAS drives for both performance and reliability. The major flaw in this layout is the lack of storage, an extra hard drive is essential. Excellent system for not only intensive tasks and gaming but a heavy benchmarker.

CPU - Intel Core i7 920 Quad Core CPU (US) Newegg.com
OS - Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit (US) Newegg.com

$4000 - Extreme Overclocking Performance Level

The main changes in this system, the use of a more overclockable motherboard and the upgrade from DDR2 to DDR3 make this system most suited to those who want to break records in overclocking and get the highest marks. At stock, this isnt much of an improvement in any way compared to the above system, but in the right hands, and the right cooling, it can be the most powerful system out there.

These above systems are all just guidelines, a base for building on. while they are good by themselves, no person does exactly the same thing with their computers so that's where YOUR personal changes influence the build.

You have your own preferences and probably need a system to do something in particular.

If you are low on cash and want to game, you can probably take whichever build fits closest to your budget and work it into something you feel better suits you.

For example, you want to game but only have $1100-$1150 for a new tower, you got a couple options, you can either go with the $750 higher entry level model and buy a couple graphics cards to crossfire or get the $1000 mainstream model, spend less on the OS and get a second HD 4850.

It works like that, lets say you want tons of storage and a decent graphics card to watch HD movies, you wont need all that much CPU power if the GPU can handle the load.

so you have the budget of $1000
you take the model for mainstream and decide to go with a cheaper dual core as well as drop from DDR2 1066 to DDR2 800, you then have enough money to upgrade from a 500GB 7200.11 to a 1TB (1000GB) 7200.11

So just for a bit of visualization, you start with this:

CD/DVD - Samsung Combo Drive (US) Newegg.com (UK) YoYoTech.co.uk
Chassis - Cooler Master Centurion 590 (US) Newegg.com
HDD - Seagate 7200.11 500GB SATA Drive (US) Newegg.com
GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 (US) Newegg.com
PSU - PC Power and Cooling Silencer 500w (US) Newegg.com
Memory - OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) CAS 5-5-5-15 2T DDR2 1066mhz (US) Newegg.com
Motherboard - Asus P5Q Pro ATX (US) Newegg.com
OS - Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit (US) Newegg.com
CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz LGA775 (US) Newegg.com

EXACT Price $978.91

and come out with this.

Samsung Combo Drive (US) Newegg.com (US) YoYoTech.co.uk
Chassis - Cooler Master Centurion 590 (US) Newegg.com
HDD - Seagate 7200.11 1TB SATA Drive (US) Newegg.com
GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 (US) Newegg.com
PSU - PC Power and Cooling Silencer 500w (US) Newegg.com
Memory - G.Skill 4GB (2 x 2GB) CAS 4-4-4-12 2T DDR2 800 (US) Newegg.com
Motherboard - Asus P5Q Pro ATX Motherboard (US) Newegg.com
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 (US) Newegg.com
OS - Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit (US) Newegg.com

EXACT price $993.91

so the end result is a slightly slower system with double the storage capacity of the original design. perfect for movie and music hoarding!

1TB will take quite a while to fill so thats a lot of entertainment.

Your system is done now and ready to order, but if you feel like you need a bit more help or a clearer picture of what you will be doing, simply take a look at this guide: Building a PC: Step by Step Guide

So now you got your basic setup, your tower is completed and ready to run, but you may want to look at some additional cooling for your new computer.

First and cheapest way to better cool down your CPU is simply buy some high quality thermal paste:

Thermal Paste - OCZ Freeze Thermal Compound (US) Newegg.com

next you may want to get some good, quiet fans to further cool your system....

These case fans are 140mm fans with 120mm fan mounting holes, they can be used almost anywhere a 120mm fan can be used very silent.

Case Fan - Scythe Kaze Maru 140mm 500RPM Fan (US) Newegg.com
Case Fan - Scythe Kaze Maru 140mm 1200RPM Fan (US) Newegg.com

Or you dont have to have a quiet system if you dont want to....

Case Fan - Scythe Kaze Maru 140mm 1900RPM Fan (US) Newegg.com

lastly, you can get a quality CPU cooler and cool down the CPU by a great amount

CPU Cooler - Scythe Ninja 2 Cooler (US) Newegg.com
CPU Cooler - Scythe Orochi Cooler (US) Newegg.com
CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper Z600 Cooler (US) Newegg.com

The Scythe Orochi cooler can have its cooling power increased by using 1-4 of the above Kaze Maru fans and these fan clips:

Fan Clip - Scythe 120mm Fan Clip (US) Newegg.com

Cooling is the first step to successful overclocking; even if you don't overclock, a system running well under its temperature limits is bound to last longer than a system running at its limits or higher.

last thing, i will post coupon codes for newegg (or any other site if i can find them) so that you can save money! saving money is always good right? Newegg.com Coupon Codes

Nice lists. That must have taken a bit of time. Millions of homes in the US are gonna start having (nearly) identical rigs. Btw, you need a line feed on the extreme level system for the PSU.

You realise that every month people will expect you to update this list when new products are introduced or pricing levels change? You're gonna have your work cut out!

Good work kris

Just one suggestion - the neweg links make it a bit uneasy reading, they are too long. I would suggest making a simple list, like:

CPU: Intel Q9650 [short version link]
MB: Asus P5Q [short version link]

That is a big improvement. You've made it far easier, with the tweaks, to see 'at a glance' each set of component within every price level. Although I think it would still read better (on the eye for quickly scanning down the page) to have:

CD/DVD - Samsung Combo Drive Newegg.com
Chassis - Rosewill Dual 120mm Fan Mid-Tower Newegg.com
HDD - Western Digital WD2500AAKS SATA drive Newegg.com
Motherboard - BioStar TA790GX ATX Newegg.com
PSU - Thermaltake TR2 430W ATX Newegg.com
Memory - Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) CAS 5-6-6-15 DDR2 800 Newegg.com
CPU - AMD Athlon X2 4050e 2.1GHz AM2 Newegg.com
OS -Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit Newegg.com
