Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

Hey there!

My father and I been looking on some new stuff for my soon-to-be-rig, but I wanted to make sure that we are getting some really good stuff, so I'd like to hear some thoughts and opinions on what we have selected.

ASUS AMD M4A79T Deluxe Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X4 955 @ 3.2Ghz
Sapphire TOXIC HD 4870 1GB
Kingston 8GB 1333MHz DRR3 (4 x 2GB) RAM
Maxtor Diamond Max 1TB HDD
NZXY Guardian 921 Case (w. 3 120mm fans)
LC Power LC8750 V2.2 750W

The price for the whole rig is quite resonable for us too, but if you have a suggestion for something that is better but cost less/a little bit more, then I am open for taking a look at it

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

hey there and welcome to DH Valkyria, that is an excellent system for gaming and performance computing, however you may squeeze more performance into there depending on your actual budget.

how much is your budget, what is your favorite online store (if online)

and do you live within the US, UK or anywhere else?

in terms of general guidelines, i recommend AMD Quad-Cores for systems $1000 or less, and i7 CPUs for systems approximately $1250 and up.

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

Thanks for the welcome =)! Glad to hear that it aint a bad system we've found!

My budget is around 1500$ more or less, atleast that is how much the rig would cost me, but I am from Denmark so most of the hardware sold here cost a bit more than in the US. (gotta love VAT and taxes *cough*). Apparently my system would only cost me around 1157$ if I ordered it from NewEgg... Bummer I don't live in the US .

I plan to buy the parts from local online stores as it would be much cheaper for me than to order from UK or US. We've picked the lowest prices for the parts from retailers we've had a good experience with in the past.

I'm a bit of a AMD fangirl and I've had positive experience with them as well, so I'd like to stick with them a bit longer. The i7 is a bit too expensive here in my country (especially the RAM blocks it requires), but I defiantly plan to build an extra computer for games, and other ressource hogging things, that has the i7 sometime in the distant future .

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

AMD fan huh? well theres nothing wrong with that.... especially now that they dominate the mainstream market

anyways, looking at your build, i can say you can trim some fat off your system.

with AMD, DDR3 doesnt increase the bandwidth very much from DDR2... their memory controller needs work.... i recommend dropping down to 4x2GB of DDR2 800 CAS 4

with the drop to DDR2, i recommend dropping the 955 to the 940 as it is mostly the same performance, its the same core, just 200mhz less

also, while your spec for a 4870 is fine and good, pre-overclocked cards are an additional expense that are rarely worth it.... i recommend getting the best card you can with the most VRAM

CD/DVD - Samsung 22X DVD Combo Drive (US) Newegg.com (UK)
Chassis - Cooler Master 690 (US) Newegg.com
PSU - Corsair 750TX 750w ATX PSU (US) Newegg.com
HDD - Seagate 7200.12 1TB SATA Drive (US) Newegg.com
GPU - EVGA GTX 275 1792MB (US) Newegg.com (UK)
Memory - 2x OCZ Blade Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) CAS 4-4-4-15 DDR2 800 (US) Newegg.com
Motherboard - ASUS M4N82 Deluxe 980a SLi ATX Motherboard (US) Newegg.com
OS - Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit (US) Newegg.com (UK)
CPU - AMD Phenom II 940 BE Quad Core CPU (US) Newegg.com (UK)

this system is similar in price but considerably more powerful in the graphics department with the GTX 275 and its 1.75GB of VRAM

newegg cost is around $1074 if you can, try to find similar spec'd components in Denmark.

if you have any questions, feel free to ask

Re: Building a new computer system and not sure where to start? Click Here! (6/23/09)

Was planning to buy this power supply, what are the opinions??

i know its an over kill, but i want to put it into a system and run it as a server ( that has 13 thin clients running of it)

i'm currently running a Q6600 and the cpu usage is around 80%, so was think of getting a better core2quad as a back up server! I could not use an i7 because of the different socket, so in case it dies / fries, i will not be able to replace in time!,

can you give me a build! of just which processor to motherboard!, because I'm not really sure what to go for, an Intel or an amd... ( and i need a lot of ram)

PS: all advice to go to get a true-power power supply!, how do i distinguish between the peak to peak and true-power

is an 4890 good
thanks in advance!

Re: Building a new computer system and not sure where to start? Click Here! (6/23/09)

seems to be pretty good but that price is..... woah

http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews....d=690&pageid=1

i recommend just getting the Corsair 1000HX as its cheaper, quieter and tested to run at 1200w despite its rating.

http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews....d=592&pageid=4

Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-1000HX 1000W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply - Power Supplies

as for the 4890, its good but a GTX 275 is better.....

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139007

4890 is good if youre tight on cash though....

Re: Building a new computer system and not sure where to start? Click Here! (6/23/09)

seems alright but i dunno about LGA775 anymore.... unless youre tight on cash, id use the money saved from the PSU to go i7

Newegg.com - MSI X58 Pro-E LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

Newegg.com - Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

even an AMD Phenom II is a better value now with quads capable of hitting 4.0GHz on any decent air cooler.... makes the clock efficacy of intel quads almost a non issue...

Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-MA790X-UD4P AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition Processor - Processors - Desktops

besides, AM2+ and AM3 are going to be supported for a long time compared to 775.

as for RAM, in terms of DDR2 id go with some good OCZ CAS 4 sticks

Newegg.com - OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2RPR800C44GK - Desktop Memory

for DDR3 id go with some CAS 8 DDR3 1600

Newegg.com - OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Low Voltage Desktop Memory Model OCZ3G1600LV6GK - Desktop Memory

Re: Building a new computer system and not sure where to start? Click Here! (6/23/09)

If you are wanting to run SLI, that isn't going to happen with that mainboard.

It will run Crossfire, which means you would have to go with a pair of ATI cards. This one would be in the same price/ performance range, plus it has DX 10.1 support which the 275 lacks.

Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE VAPOR-X 100269VXL Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

Another thing to look at is the PSU. Nothing wrong with the 1000HX. But, I think that the new 850HX would power that system just as well, and save you a bit of $$, which you could use to bump the RAM up to 8GB.

Re: Building a new computer system and not sure where to start? Click Here! (6/23/09)

yea what OldBuzzard said.... i saw the P35 chipset earlier and thought you had no plans to go with a dual GPU setup, but as i see the dual 275s, you're gonna need a motherboard switch...

Newegg.com - ASUS M4N82 Deluxe AM3/AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 980a SLI AMD Motherboard - AMD Motherboards

the 980a is a board that can handle all your SLi needs though a bit expensive...

and as OldBuzzard said, you can probably get the 850HX to save some cash but youve already went to around 50% of the PSUs output already making it the most efficient state

also, DX10.1 is pretty worthless technology now as Nvidia never adapted to it.... making developers not really want to bother with it.... so only one game is DX10.1 as far as i know

Re: Building a new computer system and not sure where to start? Click Here! (6/23/09)

i really dont think 4890s are worth it with the price of the 4870s now.... 4890 is just a minor step up really....

yea.... unless you cant get the 4870s for very cheap, i wouldnt go with a 4890, you can pretty much get 2 4870 512s for the price of 1 4890
