hey man, actually i was in the middle of updating the thread again but other things got in the way.

the 4850X2 is nice but there are issues with it and official catalyst drivers. needs sapphire drivers exclusively for the card... i can put it in but im not sure if its a good idea...

excellent work! good to see that you are having good experiences with your system, once your HDD comes, you can test whether or not Vista is for you.

I got the idea they are both monsters, that video card is gigantic and can not waite to really see it in use. boy has tech come along way from my first build with a 1 gig hard drive that ran me 1100 dollors.

yea... i probably wasnt around when computers were that slow...

now you know what you can get for even less than 1100 bucks a massive card and a quad core CPU that would be on a supercomputer level back then...

no but it took me a while of playing around with the headphones and all for a while to get the headphones and mic to even work. Good thing is with warcraft I am having very good frames per second even with graphics set pretty high.

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

is the mainstream level build up to date with todays standards? I'm looking to build a computer this month, and that build seems to fit my needs performance wise and budget wise. i just wanted to make sure there wasnt anything else out thats better than those components at that price. it should be enough to be able to run cod4 and cod5 at max settings on a 22" lcd?

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

welcome to DH kevblah!

yes the mainstream model is up to date as of yesterday, but of course, these systems are just guidelines.

if you would like, you can tell me your current needs (sounds like mainly 1680x1050 gaming) and how you would like to upgrade in the future (do you want to use SLi or Crossfire?) so i can put together a list best suited to your needs.

lastly, if you can get the extra $250 i recommend getting the $1250 i7 system as thats the kind of hardware the market's heading to. with the X58 board you can use any future i7 CPUs and you can use both SLi and Crossfire without any restraints

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

Thanks for the prompt reply, your build-a-computer guideline is the best I've ever seen. Those other guides tell me what a processor is, but I already know that. I just need someone to tell me what I can get for my money, haha.

So, the monitor I'm looking at buying is this:
Dell S2209W Flat Panel Monitor
So the resolution would be 1920x1080.

I'm not a hardcore gamer, just a casual one. I don't really play any of those really really graphics intensive games like Crysis, or whatever is the newest benchmark. I just want to sit down with my COD4/COD5, CS:S, etc., and be able to crank the settings all the way up and get a decent fps. There's nothing I hate more than choppy video, even slightly choppy, I can't handle it...i'll refuse to play the game haha.

I'd prefer to keep it around or below the $1000 mark, i dont want to spend too much money on this hobby. i could spend more, i just really want to limit myself. when i decided i would build a computer i told myself $5-600 would do, but seeing this guide made me double my budget haha, so i want to keep myself restrained.

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

haha i know what you mean, well. if you are not a HARDCORE gamer, you can always go for the entry level $500-750 systems both pack enough power to play crysis at the 1920x1080 res though not maxxed.

the $1000 system is very good though, if you want, you can add an extra 9400GT and run PhysX for games like Mirrors Edge

you kinda sound like a friend i know... lol well the GTX 275 will DEFINITELY keep you happy even with Crysis at 1920x1080 just not maxxed

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

haha well i dont see myself playing crysis anytime soon anyways, i just want to be able to run the games i do play (which are pretty tame graphics-wise) to run fine maxed out

do you think the $750 system could pump out enough graphics power at that resolution?

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

it can for games like COD4 and world at war, it just wont last quite as long, but since playability is somewhat subjective..... here are reviews

ATi HD 4770 ($750 system)
http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews....=769&pageid=11

GTX 275 ($1000 system)
http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews....d=745&pageid=7

just so you know, with 4aa and 16af these benches are seriously maxxed out.

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

thanks for those links
so im looking at the $1000 system, and trying to see where i can cut corners. what do u consider to be the bottleneck of that build?
im considering maybe getting a slightly cheaper processor to save some money, and i think 4gb of ram would be sufficient

one more thing
would you consider the $1250 build future-proof?

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

none of the systems above really have any bottlenecks, not until the extreme level anyway....

4GB of RAM is the minimum recommended amount to use vista x64 but its still very good. you can drop the CPU to the Phenom II 940

CD/DVD - LG 22X DVD Combo Drive (US) Newegg.com (UK)
Chassis - Cooler Master 690 (US) Newegg.com
PSU - PC Power and Cooling Silencer 500W ATX PSU (US) Newegg.com
HDD - Seagate 7200.12 500GB SATA Drive (US) Newegg.com (UK)
GPU - EVGA GeForce GTX 275 (US) Newegg.com (UK)
Memory - OCZ Blade Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) CAS 4-4-4-15 DDR2 800 (US) Newegg.com
Motherboard - ASUS M4A78 Plus 770 ATX Motherboard (US) Newegg.com
OS - Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit (US) Newegg.com (UK)
CPU - AMD Phenom II 940 Black Edition Quad Core CPU (US) Newegg.com (UK)

that drops the system cost to about $906 without a too drastic drop in perforamce

and yes, i consider the 1250 build to be VERY future-proof, you have triple channel DDR3, both SLi and Crossfire capability and a long list of other things

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

thats a wonderful build, thanks! i figured i wouldnt use all the extra power in the cpu in the $1000 build anyways. dropping the extra ram and cpu seems like a good way to make the build more affordable

and is this build going to be upgrade friendly down the line? i just dont want it to be obsolete in like 2 years

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

the case is nice, but doesnt have quite as much cooling potiential as the cheaper 690 case. still nice though, so if you want it then go right ahead!

as for the system itself, it can be upggraded a bit but it is mostly maxxed out, most you can do is upgrade the GPU, add more RAM and change up the CPU to the current AM3 line but i am unsure about the future AM3 CPUs. it can use any GPU released in the next 2-4 years though...

just so you know, my system is 2 years old, costed $1500 and is now in the same category of performance as the $500 system.... just a bit of info to know

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

the gtx275 says that it requires a power supply with a minimum of 550w, the one in your builds is only 500w. is that an issue? ive had problems before with gpus not starting up because of an inadequate power source

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

it should be fine but it is rather highly loaded, as i dont know the exact power consumption of the GTX 275 vs 280 and dual 4850s, you may just want to upgrade either way. a good PSU would be the Corsair 650TX

Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply - Power Supplies

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

PSU calc shows that the system is still quite under spec at 372w at standard use, and 514w if you plan to use it at 100% 24/7

if you want, you can get the Corsair PSU as it helps in overclocking, and will last longer than the PCP&C PSU

Re: Building a new system and not sure where to start? Click Here!

hey kevblah, i have a system compiled that is built specifically for your needs as well as being cheap as possible.

CD/DVD - LG 22X DVD Combo Drive (US) Newegg.com (UK)
Chassis - Cooler Master 590 (US) Newegg.com
HDD - Seagate 7200.12 500GB SATA Drive (US) Newegg.com (UK)
Motherboard - ASUS M4A78 Plus 770 ATX Motherboard (US) Newegg.com
PSU - PC Power and Cooling Silencer 500W ATX PSU (US) Newegg.com
GPU - EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 (US) Newegg.com (UK)
Memory - OCZ Blade Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) CAS 4-4-4-15 DDR2 800 (US) Newegg.com
OS - Windows Vista Home Basic SP1 64-bit (US) Newegg.com (UK)
CPU - AMD Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition Dual Core CPU (US) Newegg.com (UK)

now this is as cheap as your performance needs will come at $700 flat. personally i recommend a Quad-Core at the same clock speed vs a Dual but this still works great
