Building a new computer system and not sure where to start? Click Here! (9/4/09)

If you have clicked this link , you are either a newcomer to PC building or are someone who wants ideas and a base to start on for your next system.

An example of this would be the computing power of a high end graphics card if your main use for this system is gaming. The graphics card allows the user to see into the game better because the graphics card can deliver a much clearer and smoother image to the monitor.

here are a few different examples of the latest technologies and fastest systems at different price points.

$450-500 - Consumer Level

A cheap system for the basic yet demanding computer user that requires only the most basic level of computing performance, it is compact, lightweight, yet extremely powerful and cost-effective. while it is not the hardcore gamer's computer, it is definitely the computer of a demanding consumer. it has a powerful dual-core Athlon II 240 CPU, 4GB of Dual-Channel DDR2, a 320GB high-speed hard drive and the powerful HD 3200 integrated GPU solution that can handle light games and HD movies. System Specs

Part II

$2000 - Enthusiast Level

This build offers no real performance gains, rather, it is a preparation stage for more powerful hardware, the case is upgraded to the enthusiast level HAF 932. allowing the system to handle any possible additions to the system. The power supply can already feed 2 GTX 295 cards with extra power for a dedicated PhysX card, and the motherboard is upgraded to one that can handle all three lanes with full x16 lanes of bandwidth. The case has a much higher cooling and spacial capacity allowing for more fans to be installed and larger heatsinks to be installed. With more power and cooling capacity, overclocking is then made easier. If you are someone who buys with a plan to upgrade, this is the system for you, otherwise it would be better to stick with the above system.

$2500 - Higher Enthusiast Level

In this build, the dual 500GB HDDs have been replaced with a single Intel X25-M 80GB SSD, resulting in an ultra-fast 80GB space for the OS and key apps. The SSDs allow for the bottleneck to be removed and the overall system performance increases. It is then coupled with a 1TB 7200.12 drive for less critical programs and files. Thanks to the SSD, windows will boot in seconds, apps will load several times faster and games will skip less. The memory has been upgraded from CAS 9 DDR3 1600 to CAS 7 DDR3 1800 allowing the system to become much snappier and memory bandwidth is then greatly increased

PSU - PC Power and Cooling Silencer 910w ATX PSU (US) Newegg.com

$3000 - Extreme Level

This system is an upgraded version of the above, the second GPU is upgraded to another GTX 295 allowing for a huge leap in graphics performance compared to a single GTX 295 with just a 9400GT for PhysX

CD/DVD - Samsung 22X DVD Combo Drive (US) Newegg.com (UK)

OS - Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit (US) Newegg.com (UK) YoYoTech.co.uk
PSU - PC Power and Cooling Silencer 910w ATX PSU (US) Newegg.com

$3500 - Extreme Performance Level

This system is the same as above but the i7 920 has been upgraded to the 950 for a good boost in performance and OCing capability. a 9600GT has been added for dedicated PhysX to boost the graphics performance like the 9400GT. Highly recommended for high resolution gaming, but rather overkill on anything less than 2560x1600. No bottlenecks here, pull as much performance as you need, this system will take any stress and throw it back as best as its drivers can take it.

PSU - PC Power and Cooling Silencer 910w ATX PSU (US) Newegg.com

$4000 - Extreme Overclocking Performance Level

This systems components have been changed out to allow for a greater overclocking experience, the MSI board has been changed out for the EVGA X58 Classified E760 allowing for a far greater headroom for overclocking, the memory has been changed out for the Corsair Dominator GT sticks that are hand picked for heavy overclocking. The SSD hard drive is still the same X25-M but the capacity is doubled to 160GB, perfect for those who have several PC games or performance intensive applications. Lastly the PSU is upgraded to the Corsair 1000HX 1000w PSU, a PSU capable of handling any overclocking done on the system. this is probably the most capable overclocking system on the market, if even more performance is necessary, spend another $500 and get the i7 975 Extreme Edition and overclock until your nerves are shaken.

System Specs

These above systems are all just guidelines, a base for building on. while they are good by themselves, no person does exactly the same thing with their computers so that's where YOUR personal changes influence the build.

You have your own preferences and probably need a system to do something in particular.

If you are low on cash and want to game, you can probably take whichever build fits closest to your budget and work it into something you feel better suits you.

so you have the budget of $1000
you take the model for mainstream and decide to go with a cheaper dual core as well as drop from DDR2 1066 to DDR2 800, you then have enough money to upgrade from a 500GB 7200.11 to a 1TB (1000GB) 7200.11

So just for a bit of visualization, you start with this:

CD/DVD - Samsung Combo Drive (US) Newegg.com (UK) YoYoTech.co.uk
Chassis - Cooler Master Centurion 590 (US) Newegg.com
HDD - Seagate 7200.11 500GB SATA Drive (US) Newegg.com
GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 (US) Newegg.com
PSU - PC Power and Cooling Silencer 500w (US) Newegg.com
Memory - OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) CAS 5-5-5-15 2T DDR2 1066mhz (US) Newegg.com
Motherboard - Asus P5Q Pro ATX (US) Newegg.com
OS - Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit (US) Newegg.com
CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz LGA775 (US) Newegg.com

EXACT Price $978.91

and come out with this.

Samsung Combo Drive (US) Newegg.com (US) YoYoTech.co.uk
Chassis - Cooler Master Centurion 590 (US) Newegg.com
HDD - Seagate 7200.11 1TB SATA Drive (US) Newegg.com
GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 (US) Newegg.com
PSU - PC Power and Cooling Silencer 500w (US) Newegg.com
Memory - G.Skill 4GB (2 x 2GB) CAS 4-4-4-12 2T DDR2 800 (US) Newegg.com
Motherboard - Asus P5Q Pro ATX Motherboard (US) Newegg.com
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 (US) Newegg.com
OS - Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit (US) Newegg.com

EXACT price $993.91

so the end result is a slightly slower system with double the storage capacity of the original design. perfect for movie and music hoarding!

1TB will take quite a while to fill so thats a lot of entertainment.

Your system is done now and ready to order, but if you feel like you need a bit more help or a clearer picture of what you will be doing, simply take a look at this guide: Building a PC: Step by
Step Guide

So now you got your basic setup, your tower is completed and ready to run, but you may want to look at some additional cooling for your new computer.

The first and cheapest way to better cool down your CPU is simply buy some high quality thermal paste:

Thermal Paste - OCZ Freeze Thermal Compound (US) Newegg.com
Thermal Paste - Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound (US) Newegg.com
Thermal Paste - Tuniq TX-2 Thermal Compound (US) Newegg.com

All the above three thermal compounds are top performers and are within 1°C of each other. The only difference is the price, even the formulas may be the same. The above pastes are neither electrically conductive or capacitive making them superior replacements to the old Arctic Silver 5

next you may want to get some good, quiet fans to further cool your system....

even a set of inexpensive fans will do wonders for an overheating system.

Case Fan - Cooler Master 120mm Case fan (US) Newegg.com

These case fans are 140mm fans with 120mm fan mounting holes, they can be used almost anywhere a 120mm fan can be used very silent.

Case Fan - Scythe Kaze Maru 140mm 500RPM Fan (US) Newegg.com
Case Fan - Scythe Kaze Maru 140mm 1200RPM Fan (US) Newegg.com

Or you dont have to have a quiet system if you dont want to....

Case Fan - Scythe Kaze Maru 140mm 1900RPM Fan (US) Newegg.com

lastly, you can get a quality CPU cooler and cool down the CPU by a great amount

CPU Cooler - Scythe Ninja 2 Cooler (US) Newegg.com
CPU Cooler - Scythe Orochi Cooler (US) Newegg.com
CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper Z600 Cooler (US) Newegg.com

The Scythe Orochi cooler can have its cooling power increased by using 1-4 of the above Kaze Maru fans and these fan clips:

Fan Clip - Scythe 120mm Fan Clip (US) Newegg.com

Cooling is the first step to successful overclocking; even if you don't overclock, a system running well under its temperature limits is bound to last longer than a system running at its limits or higher.

i think i will post a list of 'specialty' systems in this part.....

...but you've lost your reserved space lol

Nice lists. That must have taken a bit of time. Millions of homes in the US are gonna start having (nearly) identical rigs. Btw, you need a line feed on the extreme level system for the PSU.

You realise that every month people will expect you to update this list when new products are introduced or pricing levels change? You're gonna have your work cut out!

Good work kris

Just one suggestion - the neweg links make it a bit uneasy reading, they are too long. I would suggest making a simple list, like:

CPU: Intel Q9650 [short version link]
MB: Asus P5Q [short version link]
...

That is a big improvement. You've made it far easier, with the tweaks, to see 'at a glance' each set of component within every price level. Although I think it would still read better (on the eye for quickly scanning down the page) to have:

CD/DVD - Samsung Combo Drive Newegg.com
Chassis - Rosewill Dual 120mm Fan Mid-Tower Newegg.com
HDD - Western Digital WD2500AAKS SATA drive Newegg.com
Motherboard - BioStar TA790GX ATX Newegg.com
PSU - Thermaltake TR2 430W ATX Newegg.com
Memory - Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) CAS 5-6-6-15 DDR2 800 Newegg.com
CPU - AMD Athlon X2 4050e 2.1GHz AM2 Newegg.com
OS -Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit Newegg.com

Well done sir! That's a LOT of work!

I think that I would recommend the Corsair 1000HX for the 2x4870 X2 systems. It would give a bit more overhead for a power-hungry system, and as we all know their quality is second to none.

I would also recommend the Cooler Master CM690 case over the RC590. I have the 690 and have taken a good look at the 590, and I think the the 690 is preferable. There is nothing 'wrong' with the 590, it's an excellent case and in my opinion, in it's class, it's second only to the 690. I just feel that given the difference in how the HDDs mount, that the 690 gives you a bit more room, especially with the longer video cards.

EDIT:

One other thought. You recommend ATI GPU's almost exclusively. While I am a "FanATIc"*, and would never use an nVidia card, they DO make excellent cards, and you might want to give a choice of "either/or" for my mortal foes, the "nVIDIOTS"*.

* used purely in jest, and not intended to cast aspersions on either side

Haha, nVIDIOTS, I like that, nice one buzz!

Id like to see some options too, just as a differening perspective..

I do have to say that ati does make superior cards for viewing HD at the moment

well at this point in time, ATi cards have the much higher band for buck but theres also the possible use of PhysX on the P45 boards, the x16, x8 is perfect for them

I have to say the physx drivers added to my 8800gt in games supporting it are friggen awesome, very noticeable frame improvements for sure.

I do agree that ATI cards are getting really competitive again, which rocks, competition is excellent. I also think that nVidia is doing the right thing in pulling an intel and slashing prices, should make for some interesting times.

Or maybe like that? Only 'cos I know you said you wanted more countries. This would allow plenty of room for more additions and looks cleaner imho. I'll PM you the list of sovereign states currently recognised by the United Nations as they change almost daily. This will ensure citizens of all countries get equal treatment without prejudice and have access to the same high quality pc builds.

This will be a very useful tool for people visiting DH. Well done dude

Just thought kris, since you added the little things like the fan clips & coolers.

Maybe putting the links in for the DH how to build a system guide, the DH how to lap your heatsink guide and, if there is one, the DH how to overclock guide (if there isn't one that could be your next sticky!) You could become the sticky mod!!

(I may have got the names of the guides wrong as I didn't check but you know the ones I mean)

Oh yeah, maybe below the coolers and fan section of this thread, briefly mentioning about buying cable ties for cable management>airflow>cooling.

Just ideas, it might make it untidy though...

Hay kris23, i don't know if you have time or not, was just wondering if i could upgrade my CPU cooler with an aftermarket one but am not sure if i will have issues with mounting it. Could you help recommend a good fan cooler?

My mother board is a K9A2 platinum
Also is there an online store that delivers To Gaborone,Botswana? that's Africa if you are wondering.

I don't mind paying for the shipping!
