HIS Radeon HD 4850 with what CPU?
I have been looking for a new GPU after finding my HIS Graphic Cards - Power Up, Gamers! is overheating. Basically all I was really looking for advice with is: what is the best choice for CPU with this card, possibly a mobo/CPU combo because my mobo is apparently a little outdated too ( GIGABYTE - Product - Motherboard - Overview - GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 1.0) ).
I am unsure too if this would be a good idea with the cooling problems I have been having on the X1950, should I get nVidia or do the newer ATI HD cards have better cooling? Also, is AMD or Intel the better choice with the ATI cards, because I am not having a big problem with the intel/ati combo unless you count the overheating prob. If you do happen to find something that you pass by, I can probably get no more than $400 to spend on the mobo/CPU if these items are needed. My CPU is 1.88gHz intel core 2 duo right now. Thanks |

Were it me I'd look to solve the overheating problem rather than just try and buy a card that has a monster cooling solution. If the system is overheating now, its likely going to overheat with a new card as it is with the same card.
First off how did you determine the card was overheating? Second, what other cooling do you have in your system now? Have you added any fans to it or taken any out? I'd put my money on there not being enough airflow. |

Well I added a front HD fan and tried to aim them all the right way (rear = exhaust) but the problem I have been having for the longest time was games not being able to run on anything BUT min graphics (even with games like Doom3) and Crysis was very poor on my system. I don't overclock at all because I don't want to ruin anything, and its already overheating.
Is this new card I'm looking at any better with cooling? Because I would hate to get a slim GPU that has more stress that overheats even faster. Last edited by WillC; Jul 17, 2008 at 06:05 PM. |

If that's the case you're going to run into the problem worse when you put in a more powerful graphics card.
Would it be possible for you to post a picture of your computer with the side panel off? To me what you describe sounds like thermal throttling on the CPU rather than the GPU overheating. |
