weird problem

I recently built a PC for a friend (specifications below) and everything was fine for the first couple of months, but then a strange problem started occurring. About every two months of so severe graphical corruption appears. At first I though it was Vista as the problem went away after switching to XP, but the problem came back, again a couple of months later. I tried stress testing the video card and reseating it as well as the RAM. I even disconnected the hard drive completely and the corruption was still present. There doesn't appear to be any heat issues and I tested the PSU with a volt meter and the readings were fine. The only (temporary) fix I've found for the problem was to shut the PC down, switch the main power supply switch off (on the back) and on then turn the PC back on.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe
Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4
Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC 430W
eVGA GeForce 7800GT CO SE
WD Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS

My friend's on vacation for a few weeks so I'd like to try and resolve this problem once and for all. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? I'd sincerely appreciate any help.

System Specs

Is the videocard new? Do you have another system/videocard you could use to test this?

It sounds like something might be failing on the videocard, or it may be overheating. Is it covered in dust? and how are the temps?

The card is used but used by me, I gave it to my friend for his PC. It was only used for about a year or so and it was bought new. I took good care of it and never had any problems with it. It was never overclocked either.

There's not much dust on the card or in the case. As for the temperature; what would you recommend to test it with, SpeedFan?
