Installing a SATA HDD

I'm trying to install a seagate 7200 barracuda sata HDD. The bios will show it, but when I go to my computer it is not there. I can go to disk management and it will be there..I used disc wizard and it will find it, but when I go to set a partition on it I get a write error. I want to copy my old ata HDD to this one. Thanks for any help: I'm using a asus P4P 800e deluxe board. Intel 865 chipset. it also has the promise 20378 raid controller..

Check the cabling and try another connector on the motherboard if possible. If that doesn't help then it might be time to check the drive with the manufacturers diagnostics software.

anyone now what drivers i use for a p4p800 e deluxe ASUS. I'm assuming using the non raid sata port1 and 2 I will be using the INTEL ICH5R southbridge controller. if so Do i need to install a differnt driver...it also has a promise 3078 fastrak, this is used for the raid sata...RIGHT?..Thanks

Make sure your jumpers are right.

Like, make the new drive slave for now, and make sure your old one is master.

After the copy, do it opposite, with the SATA being master and the old one slave if you still plan to use it.

As far as I know it should work right out the box.

I had the same trouble with my SATA drive. I think I had to format it with some sort of boot disk before I was able to use it.

does it matter what sata port i use,wheather it is sata raid or sata ata ports

Do you have the SATA mode set to RAID? If not then it don't matter what port to use. MBR boot mode is what you want to use in XP or earlier OS's and linux. Vista can support GPT but since no other OS support it I don't recomend to use it.

Are you trying to run the SATA drive in AHCI Mode? If so for XP you need to do the F6 method (when installing the operating system, after the OS is installed if you did not do the F6 you will not be able to get AHCI mode working, In rare cases people have gotten it workin after OS installation.) Your best bet is to slipstream a disk with the required drivers for AHCI/RAID if this is the case.

If in your BIOS it is running normal IDE mode, then there is something wrong with how you hooked up your HDD.

Check your BIOS and see under like Disk management area of the BIOS to see if its set to AHCI or IDE. Since you didnt say anything of a BSOD upon trying to load windows with this disk, I will assume its in IDE but stranger things have happened. (Most likely it wouldnt BSOD because this isnt the OS disk, so maybe you need to try a different SATA port or cable)

I'm just trying to plug the RED CABLE to the sata1 connecter, I have a 7200rpm 250gig seagate barracuda..HDD..trying to get it to work so I can clone my 120 ide to the sata drive. When I plug the sata drive up, reboot it will show up in as a slave drive. when I go to True Image and try and clone my IDE HDD it will start and then a few mins later it will stop and I will get a write error msg. after that my sata drive will disapear..
Can I do a bakup of my HDD image with True Image, do a complete install of windows and then restore everything with the image I have already made..

ok for this problem:
Sata drives usually do not need jumpers
If it shows up in management you just need to right click and create a new partition

I'm not sure but i never use the RAID ports on my board, i go straight for the SATA ports instead.
