Simple question.

What should i get :
PowerColor HD3870 512MB GDDR4
Leadtek or Asus 9600GT 512MB GDDR3
Leadtek 8800GT 512MB GDDR3
Leadtek or Sparkle 8800GTS 512MB GDDR3
Sparkle 9800GTX 512MB GDDR3

Is 8800GTS worth the 60$ more than 8800GT ?
Is waiting for another month worth getting a 9800GTX ?

The 8800GTS 512 is faster in some cases than the 9800GTX. Plus, the fact that the 8800GTS 512 is almost 1/2 the price makes me go with it over the 9800GTX.

However, I've said this before, the 9000 series cards has one big advantage, and that is better, waaay better video hardware acceleration. If you plan to watch HD movies on this computer the 9000 series cards help with playback once you crank the output up to 1080p.

The rest is :
CPU - Intel C2Q Q6600
MB - Asus P5E x38/ICH9R
RAM - 2x1GB OCZ Platinum DDR2 1000MHz CL5
HDD - WD Caviar 500GB SATA2
PSU - 600W OCZ GameXStream Premium

Running all that on a poor old x1950 and it has served me very well so far but its time for a change me thinks.

Can that OCZ handle all that plus the 9800GTX?
How long do you plan on keeping the rest of the system?
What is your monitor and if it is a TFT monitor, how many inches is it and what is its native resolution? If it is a CRT monitor, what is its max resolution?

I dont know if it can handle it. If it can then im gonna grab another 2gb of ram if not then i gues im out for a new psu.
I dont keep a system i upgrade it when i have money piece by piece thats how i got this far give old back and add some money for new stuff but i cant do that with this x1950 tho.. too old.
I do a complete rebuild of the whole system once every 2-3 years but in the meantime i get what i can when i can

The monitor is a TFT 22" Asus VW222S. Running desktop resolution 1680x1050.

Yea but when the new cards get out they will be as expensive as 9 series when they got out so ill have to wait again until the prices drop and then a new series is gonna be coming out and so on. I have been waiting a long time since i placed my GPU at the bottom of the upgrade list back when i was running a p35 board w/ C2D e4500 and now its GPU upgrade time.

If you are going to keep the rest of the system for at least another year, and since you are going to run games up to 1680x1050, then I would see no reason to waste money on a 9800GTX. By that time the new DX10.1 cards from Nvidia should be out...
If you don't play graphic intensive games, get the 9600. If you play games then get one of the 8800.

IMO as always.

So your saying that at this resolution an 8800GTS 512MB would run any game (present and in near future(1y)) smoothly with maxed out details on DX10 with all the MSAA & AF stuff (with another 2gb of ram) ?

I didnt really see any of those cards in action only looked at the bechmarks but they dont tell me as much as seeing the card run a game in person.

to be honest.....some of the newest cards to date up against the newest games on max detail do not do extremely well so thats a very hard question to answer to tell you the truth

No.

From the games that are out now, I believe only Crysis and perhaps a couple more games can't be run with that card at max settings at that resolution. But if you lower just a couple of settings you shouldn't have a problem.
I still think it would be a waste of money to get the 9800GTX now. By the time you need the power of the 9800GTX, the 9800GTX might not be powerful enough plus the lack of DX10.1 might hurt it, no matter what Nvidia says now.
