Looking for the correct DVD drive
Alright if you didn't know i am using windows98se, so it has FAT32, 4GB limit. Anyway, i wanted to burn some files that is 1GB or 2GB, funny thing i have some sony dvd+r blank discs and when i put one in the D drive, nothing shows up.
So i found this on another forum, that someone said: The drive you are typing about is called a Combo-Drive. This type of LG drive can read most any format including DVD, but can only write to CDR or CDRW. DVD burning is not included with the drive. It lacks the guts to burn a disk in that manner. My Drive is called: HL-DT-ST- RW/DVD - GCC 4521B So my question is, if this thing wont read DVD discs, what can i buy at a good price, newegg or bestbuy or whatever else is cool, so if you have any links to the correct device, please post them. I had this dvd combo drive for a while now, over 2 years. But never knew anything about how it cant read blank dvd discs, that sucks [mad] I paid 62 dollars for this thing at gateway EDIT; I found this: Sony - 20x Internal Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive - DRU-840A But will this work on my computer, does me having to use EIDE/PATA have anything to do with it? |

That drive what you have is just that combo drive that can read DVD's only. And when you put blank disc on it it wont be able recognize it.
And you can get that Sony drive to replace that LG drive of yours.

It says XP, not 98 ... which might be that the supplied software (Nero 7) might not be compatible.
If you want it to run on a 98 system best to choose a drive which has 98 in the specifications. Also seems rather expensive, though it is retail packed

must be the software included which requires XP ..... I don't see how a dvd drive would "require" a particular version of Windows...
