Few questions

Hi

Im looking to get :

CPU:Intel C2Q Q6600
GPU:XFX 8800GTS 640MB
MB:XFX nForce 680i S775

and some other stuff but those 3 items i have questions about..

1.Iv seen that there are b3 and g0 Q6600 processors and iv heard that g0 is better but how can i tell the difference ? Does it say anywhere if its b3 or g0 so that i know which one it is before i actually buy it ?

2.I have read that there are older and newer versions of 8800GTS 640MB and that older are slower than GT while newer are faster .. is this true ? and if so how can i tell if its older or a newer one before i take it home.

3.Is this XFX mobo any good or should i avoid it and take some other ?

Thank you

1. G0 uses less power. Here are the product numbers (courtesy of PangingJR)
Quote:
Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600

1) sSpec Number: SLACR
Core Stepping: G0
Box Order Code: BX80562Q6600
OEM Order Code: HH80562PH0568M

2) sSpec Number: SL9UM
Core Stepping: B3
Box Order Code: BX80562Q6600
OEM Order Code: HH80562PH0568M
See this thread for more details.

2. The new 8800GT 512MB is better than the GTS as it has new architecture. The GT is also cheaper. However, the new architecture for the GTS should be rolled out in the new year.

3. The 680i is old architecture and will restrict you. Get something from this page here. I advise that you go with either the Asus or Gigabyte models

get an 8800GT

a sSpec SLACR G0 stepping Q6600

a X38 motherboard with ICH9R southbridge

its better to go with X38 boards rather than P35 due to the enhanced overclocking features, the new PCI-E 2.0 spec and all that good stuff

I think it is misleading to say one motherboard is better solely because it might (or has) better overclocking potential.
There are other things too, like stability, features, etc that matter far more than overclocking. Not everyone is interested in gettting a mainboard just to overclock.

First off thanks everybody )

I found this board available here that isnt too expensive and it meets all that you have said (i think).Asus S775 P5K-E WIFI-AP,P35 ICH9R,1333,DDR2 1066,CrossFire,eSATA,2x1394,GLAN
Good or not ?

I was wondering why is it so important that the Northbridge be p35 and southbridge ICH9R what is their advantage over nf680i (nf680i sure is more expensive) ?
I mean i know that northbridge controls RAM and GPU and southbridge controls SATA ,IDE etc.. but what is so much better on p35 than on nf680i?
The only down side about this motherboard is that its Crossfire and not SLI but i gues ill have to push on with one 8800GT until i get the money to upgrade to a new card instead of adding another 8800GT .. hey maybe that way i might save some money .. who knows.

Another thing i was interested in is what is the difference between BOX and OEM processors and wich one is better ?

dude, i didnt just say OCing potiental, while it is useful, the hardware features like PCI-e 2.0 is much more important if video cards will be upgraded due to the less bandwidth in the 1.0 spec that is still quite common.

nearly every X38 board has features over the P35 series due to the needed voltage regulation, the more efficient the board the better. ASUS has their EPU that enhances performance and stability by eliminating.

i don't see what you have against overclocking boards. their whole base is stability, their cooling, their components, their binning is all based around stability because if they arent superior from the beginning, they cant possibly perform stable overclocked.

dont think that "overclocking" boards are just features you pay for and don't use, they have their value in the longevity they give.

Only thing is for the money nothing at this moment beats a good P35 based board. I went w/ X38 for specific reasons.

I have nothing against mainboards that can super overclock. I used to have a good DFI once. But to spend more money for an overclocking board when you don't need it, it is a waste of money.
Same with SLI boards. If you don't plan on getting a second graphics card in the next couple of months and instead planning on getting it in a year or two, you are wasting money.
Most people end up buying either a new and faster graphics card or a new system by the time they need the performance of a second original graphics card like the one they already have for SLI use.

Anyone ?
the boxed retail processor comes in a sealed box with a 3-year warranty from Intel.
and you will also always find the included Intel stock fan/heatsink in a Q6600 boxed retail processor.

all that may and can be different with the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) processor (sometimes referred to as a tray processor). and the product warranty terms and warranty conditions can be different from one (OEM manufacturer or distributor) to another.

i will leave you to decide for yourself whether the Q6600 boxed retail processor is better or not.

I always go for the retail CPU since apart from the warranty (which usualy you don't need for CPUs), the stock fan and heatsink are very good for their job for the Intel CPUs at least.

And there's not much difference in the price (just a few dollars more).

People tend to buy the OEM when they are going to use an aftermarket cooling solution bought seperately. This lowers the temperature which increases longetivity of the product and also allows potentially higher overclock would be possible. However, the stock HS/Fan supplied by Intel is more than adequate for normal daily use imo.

BTW, like Panging said the retail boxed version is a 3 year warranty, while the OEM is just one year.

You really dont need warranties on CPU's... its going to far exceed the life of that warranty anyways, even overclocked.

Retard, admittedly, I like your choice of mainboard - strikes me as a great value for the money with a great featureset (the wi-fi can be very handy, good onboard sound, eSata, Firewire, above average heat sinking, Raid southbridge, and plenty of USB 2.0 ports) and good overclockability in one board for less than $150.00 (shipping included). I've had my eye on that one too (the Asus P5K-E Wi-Fi), and would also like the Gigabyte DS-4 Rev. 2 board, but it's 40.00 more.

You may want to consider an ATI 3870 video card at the moment - reviews of late show it performs almost on par with the 8800GT/GTS cards for much less money (a DH review is due soon, keep your eyes open!), and your choice of mainboard supports those in Crossfire should you choose to upgrade down the road - although the benefits of Crossfire are spotty...

lol, in that regard of having it first, nope, not because it's cheaper, the friend of mine will have to pay more for a tray processor plenty of times.

System Specs

I have ordered an Q6600 with G0 stepping BOX and Asus P5K-E WIFI-AP Mobo and 2GB Kingston HyperX DDR2 1066Mhz memory but im still looking for 8800GT since there are none here .. They say they had some but sold them all in 1 day so im waiting for some more to arrive . Im looking for an MSI 8800GT 512MB since Zotac is not represented here and from a review i read here on DH MSI is the best one after Zotac.

Thanks people DH is the best place to search for advice Always has been and always will be

That slooks like a nice system you've got ordered. The Kingston probably wouldn't have been my first choice but it's a reputable brand and will work just fine. The MSI should do the job for you as well and is a quality board. I can't remember now, is this going to be Vista rig?

Not just yet but in a month or two i plan to get another 2GB of RAM and then switch to Vista

you think that would be enough to run games on vista without problems ?
