Intel Core Duo or Quad.
AMD just can't keep up with Intel in terms of performance.

So why is the Architecture better, and why does it make it a better chip?

Google some benchmarks, and it will become ever more apparent

It would be hard to describe why its better, without extensive knowledge of the field, and chip design

hmm, i don't know, but i think, if you have to ask that questions, then the answers are probably yes for both.
it is not hard to see why the answer would be yes for both, but if you have to know why, you might as well buy the processor now, since you are thinking of getting it now.

i don't know, but i think some people will want to wait for Intel's or AMD's new processor to come out, some people just don't like to wait for that.

the new processors from intel will be out soon but the Q6600 is a good cheap processor. if you dont wanna spend 500+ on a 45nm quadcore, just get the Q6600, its awesome

If past behavior is any indication then yes. But honestly they don't feel threatened by AMD in the least now so unless AMD has a real wobbler planned for us they probably won't bother with the effort until the next new microarchitecture

latest so called "reviews" of Phenom FXs and QX9650s shows the QX9650s raping AMD in the buttholes..... however many there are.....

but nothing's final until they're released so keep ur fingers crossed for the sake of competition!

I wonder if AMD bought ATI cause they knew the CPU front was lost.

hopefully ATI's next line of cards does something to compete with nvidia. or AMD will be losing on both fronts.

I'll admit it. I sold out. I wouldn't have gone with an intel processor, but AMD was just too far behind.

Plus, I figured I have to play the role of consumer and buy the better product given the cost. FX chips in the same price range were far shorter on performance than the Q6600.

I'm still a die-hard AMD/ATI fan, but for my most recent, I went with the better product over the personal preference. - Even went with nVidia for the graphics simply due to better (in my book) multiple GPU options and superior gpu's entirely, IMO.

On the upside, my old 2800+ is now @ 2.4ghz (12x400) with an old Thermalright SLK-900A and Vantec Tornado strapped to it and is still running like a champ 6 years later. Even scored an 1800 in 3dmark06!

merlinxi is on a distinguished road

Okay from my Specs in my signature, this is what I am going to be upgrading soon. I am going to wait until the holiday season to see if the prices go down:

Asus P5B P965 Pentium Extreme/Pentium D/P4/Celeron D 1066FSB LGA775 DDR2 ATX Motherboard w/Audio, Gigabit LAN, RAID/Serial ATA Retail (Motherboard)

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Quad-Core Processor 2.4GHz, 1066FSB, LGA775, 8MB cache Retail

OCZ OCZ2G8002GK 2GB Kit DDR2-800 PC2-6400 Gold Gamer eXtreme XTC Edition Dual Channel Memory Retail

Asus EN8800GTS/HTDP/640M GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB PCI-Express Video Card w/Dual-DVI, HDTV-Out Retail

I need suggestions for a after-market cooler fan, as I amgoing to overclock the q6600 to 3.0 GHZ.

Thoughts?

Dont buy a P965 its an outdated chipset by now....go for a P5K Deluxe or Premium based on P35 chipset, it will overclock your Quad better as well and be more stable as well as boasting superior memory bandwidth.
