DISC DRIVES DONT WORK?! help :(

i just recently bought a computer from ebay. Everything is in working order, expect the dvd n cd drives. Sometimes, if im lucky, i can see in "My Computer" that it is detected. When i see that, i insert any disc, a game for example, and it doesn't start. Sometimes the drive aint even detected at all :S. Is this the reason of a faulty drive?
Thanks

System Specs

Check the back of the Drive itself and see if one is set to master and one is set to slave (should be a set of small toggle switches on the back). Also check in your bios whether or not you have them in your boot order, and what your IDE or Sata configs are, though im guessing they are IDE drives. So check that out as well, anything else just post

Hm, it sounds like a simple problem, such as a loose IDE cable or (as ChaosMinionX already said) wrong master/slave settings. You could just set both drives on 'cable select' and the motherboard will detect them automatically if that is your problem.

Furthermore, you could try unplugging one of the drives to see if its causing a conflict and re-install your motherboard drivers.
