Just to let you know that I have downloaded and installed the beta SP1 for XP, am trying it out now.
No problems to report, only draw back was the download time on my 56K modem, but hey you cannot say that I am not dedicated.
Just to underline what has been said already, if you are using a copy of XP with the key code that begins FCK........, then the SP will not install, according to everything I have seen.
It has been mooted on other boards that future updates and developments will not be able to install without SP1 having been executed, whether this is right or wrong I cannot say, but it appears to makes sense.
The SP1 pack is also on a 180 day licence, so the final release must be close to completion.

actually the 180 days is in the EULA but its not a time bombed release only the integrated isos are
its very close to completion MS has said it will launch on my mothers birthday August 14th
As you said it will not install on the famous FCK... serial but any other corp serial will work fine
as for updates after a certain point the SP1 will be required, usually MS gives time for it be downloaded due to users on 56k
BTW thats what i call extreme dedication
you must have started downloading right after I posted this
man i love cable 5 minutes and its downloaded and installin

it means if you have the corporate release that has the FCKGW-... key then it will not work
theres a good tutorial on ieXbeta on how to change your key
all you need to do is find the XP Keygen program and make the keys and then switch the keys and voila it will work

im kinda preempting this --- I know this thread is ok as we have no direct links etc, and yes I also know it sucks but its the way this forum has to be run. (otherwise it could be closed).
thanks

Refresh Rates
For the information of this forum.
Having installed the said beta SP1 for XP, one the biggest question from gamers is I believe going to be, 'have they fixed the refresh rate?'
The answer so far is no they have not
I use an ATI card and installed the refresh lock which came with the omega drivers. just to test this out I disabled refresh lock.
Every single refresh rate available on my, perhaps antiquated, monitor was stuck at 75hrtz, also from my 95, 98, and ME days it was possible, in fact neccessary, to configure every single combination after installing new drivers, because those OS's would automatically default to the optimum, no such configuration is available, as far as I can tell, in the updated XP.
I had to re-enable refresh lock, and set it all up.
So it would appear that we will still have to rely on third party software to obtain the refresh rate we prefer when gaming.
I am in no way an expert, and am only passing on my experiences, I could well be totally wrong, and in some ways I hope that I am

Hey Microsoft.... I'm holding up a finger. Guess which one?
If you have a wild Corp Edition of Win XP, it IS true that Service Pack #1 (leaked beta now available at xp-erience ) will refuse to install saying you have an invalid serial key.
Perhaps that's going on with you, or you want to change your existing key to a corporate key. Or you just want to change your key for whatever reason.
If you want to avoid reinstalling XP just to change your serial key, follow these instructions (Corporate Edition / Generated Corp key - Only)
BTW - The "real" keygen is named "XPKey.exe", is 48.0 KB (49,152 bytes) and put out by THE BLUE LIST).
Run Reg Edit and browse to this key:
"HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\C urrent Version\WPAEvents"
Change ANYTHING (any one digit) of the value: oobetimer
(this will de-activate XP - allowing you to enter a new key)
Enter This is START\RUN:
C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
Choose the option to change by phone
Choose the option (buttun at the bottom) to change your KEY
Enter your new KEY and close the window
Reboot and run the activation again (Msobe.exe). The activation dialog window should appear again, but this time say that your version of XP is already activated.
I just ran through this on my system and it worked. I went from a known "wild" corporate key that SP1 will block, to a keygen generated corporate key following the above steps and SP1(beta) will now install.
Please don't ask me for the Keygen, and I don't know where you can get it (try searching for "XPKey.exe" or "all_xp_suite_keygen" on KaZa).
Be careful, there are some nasty versions of the keygen out there. Scan anything you get with a virus scanner before using it, and try to get the version I mention above (the original good version - 5.12).
