My friends drive has files he needs but his PC has died.

How can i take files from his HDD? if i connect it as a slave does it need a format? when i tried before it said' drive not formatted' i think i had the jumpers right.

Is there something i can do?

It should work right off if the drive itself is okay. But try connecting the drive alone to a single cable to make sure.

You can try booting a Knoppix liveCD, if Knoppix will recognize the drive that means that the hardware itself is OK. Then you can proceed to take an image of the drive, but you'll need somewhere to store it that has free space equal to the total size of the drive itself.

I'm sitting here shaking my head at this response. Did you even read the OP's comments? It's a HDD that has files on it that need to be retrieved. It's not a totally blank drive.
